I could see it having potential, but definitely at least a little too zany. Best characters are definitely Ed O'Neill and the main dad. The entire gay plotline is just too much and is mostly entirely unfunny.
I don't know how zany it is, but I understand why you'd say that. Phil is great, and Ed O'Neill is great as well. As for the gay angle, the redhead is the weakest part of the show IMO, but Cam is my #1 or #2 favorite characters on the show. He makes the whole gay thing tolerable (and funny).
I'd give it the first season, or at least most of it (or more than just three episodes). If you find yourself not liking it still, then you likely won't and can stop.
At least get to the Valentine's Day episode when Phil and Claire do their alter egos.

we checked out the first 3 episodes last night. Meh. I just really feel like every show suffers now if it's not on HBO or one of those stations.
How would HBO make this show funnier. I'm sure most of this board would love the gratuitous nudity, but how would that make it any funnier? It was definitely more edgy at the beginning, but they've made some race jokes I was surprised to see on ABC and they've even gone into some relatively risque areas like the kids walking in on the parents doing it doggy style.

Cam is probably the character Jersey doesn't like because he is a bit over the top. I do think their are some over the top gay men so I don't think his action falls into over the top.
I laugh my arse off every time I see Cam running towards their car screaming with the trash can over his head to smash the window.
JERSEY
Yes, the show sometimes ends with a serious comment on life. That is why I like the show. It has heart and comedy. Ed O'Neil is perfect. He is similar to Al Bundy but he is a more believable realistic grumpy dad on Modern Family.

There's just not a single interaction that rings true to me (and I am a parent with a pretty weird greater family). Actually, I should take that back. The way Phil is with his son is at least quasi-realistic from my perspective.

I'm at least going to watch the rest of the first disc. As I said, it's not bad, it's just not (at least so far) great.
Mainly, it makes me sad that Sons and Daughters was taken off the air after only 13 episodes. If you haven't seen it, I highly highly recommend it. It's one of the best shows ever.

After that disc, if you feel like you're giving up on it, at least watch episode 15, My Funky Valentine. Especially since you kinda like Phil.
If you don't enjoy that episode, then you won't like any of them IMO.

If you didn't laugh when they played the lion king music when they introduced Lily, then I feel bad for you.

Without a doubt ...the best show on tv.
Dont worry about the gay thing.....Cam is so over the top funny....its ok.
There is a laugh out loud moment 2 or 3 times a show.
"whatever was going on......it looks like DAD was winning!"

I don't know the lion king music. I did laugh at the fact that her name was Lily and that the guy said "won't it be hard to pronounce her name".

It's one of the funniest shows on TV. To compare it to Arrested Development as one poster said he's heard is a bit ludicrous, though. AD was way drier and more Jason Bateman awkwardly plying through a psychotic family. Modern Family is not centered on one character and, though awkward at times, funny in other respects. Regardless, it's funny because Christopher Lloyd made it. Enjoy

Yeah, I do love Frasier and especially Wings.

I do love Frasier
And don't give me the normal response that he was a celebrity. He was a local radio guy. Nobody considers local radio guys to be huge stars.

Well, he was well-to-do also and a notable figure in the highbrow circuit.

the valentines episode is hilarious IMO
"my wife always makes lists..."
I actually like the sappy/cheesy endings where they sorta tie everything up and remind you that the show really is about family and sticking together, etc
my 2nd fav show on TV after the office, it gets better

Why does this matter in a comedy? Comedy is about the absurd.

quote:True. But I also disagree with his statement. I think most of the situations can and do happen to people daily with their families. Maybe not him, but I really don't think they come even close to stretching real life situations too far.

Most of the situations they end up in are normal but the twists are pretty over the top. I don't know why Jersey doesn't find over the top side splittingly hilarious, but if it's a turnoff he probably won't like the episode where Phil's car advertising goes horribly wrong or the episode about Lily's commercial.

There are a few on here that like the show but don't like Phil and have repeated that sentiment in episode threads.
That's me. He annoys me most of the time. The Valentines episode was his best though.
I find it to be a good show but not a great one. It might be the funniest comedy on network TV right now but that isn't saying much either.

Absurd can still be realistic.

Nah, not like in the 3 episodes I've seen. A good example is the big-titted next-door neighbor. My wife would never care if she lived there and I would never have even the slightest motivation to hide the fact that I had been to her house or that I liked her big tits.
Another would be the race between the husband and the wife.
Also, I actually find the main wife to be more attractive than the mexican.

Same here.
The Hawaii episode was great for that (with Jay and Gloria).
