I respectfully disagree. Les Mes was an acquired taste for me. I fell in love with Phantom almost instantly.
The musical score and songs are of a far superior quality. Almost every song is perfect. Les Mes has some snoozers.

I really enjoyed the technique they used on the 2012 adaptation (less theatrical, more raw) but sweet Jesus... Russell Crowe was so terrible when singing.

He's like that kid on the little league baseball team that plays out field and never gets a hit. You just tell him good job, bud. You tried your best and give him a snowcone after that game so he feels involved.
Whats sad is I can never ever hear this line again:
quote:
Now prisoner 24601
Your time is up
And your parole's begun
You know what that means.
Without hearing it in Crowes voice.
Jackman and Hathaway are both classically trained singers. Crowe not so much.

After phantom of course, I would have to say Jersey Boys is the best one I've seen. It is a really good show that you don't hear about as much.
I have always wanted to see Hairspray, but have never seen it touring anywhere around us.
Book of Mormon is great, but I don't think it's in the discussion of GoAT.
Phantom has the music, settings, costumes, cast. It's without question the GOAT.

Where's the closest Sonic so we can settle this?

The Music of the Night is a classic, but in totality, I think Les Mis has Phantom beat
If you want to argue les miz is a better story or more impressive production than phantom that's fine.
One thing that can't be argued is the soundtrack and score. Phantom is by far the best and it's not close.

Wicked and Phantom of the Opera are my two most favorite musicals of the past 20 years or so. I still love the classics like West Side Story and The King and I. Pretty much anything composed by Sondheim is great as well.

I'm not sure about live theatre but I love The Sound of Music.

Phantom of the Opera
Rent
Sweeney Todd
Little Shop of Horrors
Jesus Christ Superstar
West Side Story
Grease
The Producers
In my opinion, I enjoy all of these more than Les Mis

My mom loves Les Miz, but I'm not a huge fan of the Broadway "operas". It is a great example of the era it came from (the 80s), and it stands alongside Phantom of the best of its era or at least the best representation (and ugh... Cats). But let's be hones, the 1980s was a dismal period for Broadway and being the best musical of the 80s is damning with faint praise.
The problem with Les Miz is that while it is a dramatic spectacle, its songbook doesn't stick with you for weeks and even years. I can sing pretty much every song from West Side Story or Music Man right now. Or Man of La Mancha or South Pacific. They have enduring songbooks and have almost been woven into the fabric if American life.
But the greatest musical ever is Wizard of Oz, and I don't think it's all that close (though I'll entertain arguments for Singin' in the Rain, Sound of Music, or West Side Story for best movie musical). It's iconic.

Guess I'm weird... it's the only one that has stuck with me.

No, I meant the Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz is so great, it's spawned two highly successful variations of the same play (The Wiz and Wicked).
Wicked is great, though. Defying Gravity is the bomb.

I can't believe that some swingin' dick hasn't come in here and proclaimed Hamilton the greatest thing ever.
It's certainly up there. I agree with OP that Les Mis is the greatest of all time, though.

Me too, though I suppose it could be that I was so moved by the story that the entire production stuck with me.
