I'm almost through the final season of a Mad Men rewatch and my opinion of Joan is generally that she's a piece of shite. Am I forgetting some large redeeming moments, or does her behavior overall put her on the shittier side of the line?

She's kind of the female Roger. Generally good person at heart, but definitely selfish and that causes her to run over people at times.

This.

The beauty of Mad Men is no one is perfect. They all sit in that gray area from time to time. As said, sometimes the decisions Joan makes to benefit herself can have some collateral damage. But you can say that for a lot of the characters. Especially Don.

She was kind of bitchy for the early/mid part of the series, mostly towards newer/inexperienced secratairies. And she did Don wrong after the Hershey's suspension, voting against allowing him back despite him being (I believe) the only one that was against her banging Jaguar fatty.

I can't really think of her doing anything particularly kind, or ever going to bat for her coworkers. IIRC she may have been supportive of Rumsen when he was drinking hardcore and pissing himself. And she did recognize the greatness of Bob Benson (an A+ coffee buyer). But that's it.

That's Peggy.

She only thinks of Peggy and what's in Peggy's best interest. From aborting Pete's baby to ditching Don who made her. Remember, everything to Peggy is an opportunity.

Joan turning on Don is understandable.

She pimped her Cooze to get Jaguar and Don flushed the account down the toilet in an infantile tantrum of pride and ego.

She got extremely rich in the process. It wasn't some altruistic sacrifice. And they were losing that business no matter what.

She definitely likes to play head games with people and constantly assert her dominance. She can be helpful to younger newer types but even that seems to have an ulterior purpose of making them need her and something she will throw in their face if needed.

She got what she wanted out of that deal. The cooze was a sunken cost. Losing Jaguar was inevitable and also a benefit to her for not having to see that scumbag again and also avoiding any chance he may demand another romp.

And she got a partnership out of it.

Her anger at Draper was ridiculous. They needed conflict and that apparently was the best they could come up with.

Show is excellent overall but I never cared for the direction they went in this instance.

You can watch mad men and come away feeling this way about any character in the series imo. Likely comes down to your scale of liking the character on how much you’re willing to take of them being a bad person because they all do shitty things like Joan, some much shittier behavior and we still root for those characters because they’re fun

In short, everyone in the series is awful overall (still all great and fun characters of course )

I think Ken Cosgrove was always a friendly straight shooter and just did the job well and didn't try to screw anyone over. The only "bad" thing he did was get some light revenge on the company that did him hilariously dirty at the end of the series.

Also all the creative underlings-- Stan especially, were generally saints.

Peggy (who I also dislike) didn’t abort Pete’s baby. She gave it up for adoption.

Yea, I really ended up hating Peggy. I felt a little sorry for her early on because she was so damn ugly, but it ended up that her personality was even uglier.
