Eh? Dedicated media boxes are WAY better than TV apps. They are updated more often, have faster processors, more RAM and are generally more consistent with high quality streams. Even the best of Samsung and Sony can't compete with a dedicated media device.

If you are going through a firestick or fire tv, you can google how to bypass the encryption or whatever to get Max on NOW. I did it when it came out and havent had any problems getting Max.

Works like a charm on my Apple TV and the UI is better than HBO Go and HBO Now

I’m sure it will come to ROKU soon

Roku is asking for he same terms that they have with Disney+, Hulu, Showtime, Starz and every other service yet they are at fault?

Wasn’t aware that Roku gave blanket agreements to all major players. Even if they did, HBO now has the data from their previous Roku users and is providing a top tier, expanded content service with a massive, pre-existing subscription base. It’s good business for the Peacocks and HBO Maxes to demand that Roku and Amazon play ball with them.

Roku has their own game with updating their boxes and making users buy new ones in order to keep their full library of apps. They’re not some charitable organization being preyed upon by vicious content providers.

It’s all just the same content game that we went through with cable. Cable providers argue with content providers to bring their cost down. But with cable ratings dipping and content fees dropping, you’ll never see a rate decrease or rebate on your bill unless you demand it.

Roku has all the leverage in this situation though. If it’s a blanket agreement and hbo is saying no, then yea. It’s on HBO.

Disagree.

I would never even consider to buy an external device like a Roku if I invest in a smart TV.

The convenience and less device clutter that smart TVs provide outweighs what you say above regarding media boxes, imo. Plus, you don't have to deal with an extra company's policies creating consumer issues like the one that spawned this thread.

My experience with Samsung smart TVs has been nothing, but top notch. They are extremely fast in processing and loading apps. Wire Ethernet to the TV and you'll have the highest quality stream.

I'll take my smart TV that automatically updated to HBO Max on launch any day over a Roku.

I like roku way more than Samsung smart tv, but I honestly think this is like an Apple vs. Samsung debate. Personal preference mostly.

I have Samsung and Sony smart TVs, and Roku > than both imo. Just way easier to use

However, the HBO max issue is a legit complaint

And pretty much every tv is smart these days, it’s not like you have make a choice to spend the extra $ to get a smart one

Agree with that.

For me, I'll take the one package over another external device.

True. I always assume that most of the market that's using Roku devices are buying them because they have older TVs and it's a cheaper alternative than a new TV with internet apps.

Naw they're just better/faster

Also my TV is Chinese so I try to only hook it up to the internet for firmware updates and then I disconnected from the internet

actually, until this issue, Roku is the best option to avoid these propriety/rights issues. Roku has EVERYTHING b/c it's not directly associated with a hardware or content producer. your typical TV brand apps are very limited and your devices made by content producers create cross-licensing issues (for example, my XBox doesn't get access to my Google Play b/c of the proprietary interest in the Microsoft store)

That may have been true back when Roku/fire sticks first came out. I just find that they are much easier/better to use

Too poor to own a dedicated app box huh?

Seriously, Roku is a MUCH better platform than any of the TV based app support. In fact, the better the TV/PJ the less likely they give a shite about app support. The cheap TVs are the ones that do the best job (although still only marginal) because they are marketed to people that aren't interested in paying the extra money for high end app support.

It will be interesting to see how HBO and Roku/Fire get on with this issue, the same with Peacock. It represents nothing but frustration for customers.

I have Apple TV and there is no HBO Max app for me. It’s an older AppleTV so I guess I’m just fricked.

Guess I’ll be cancelling HBO.

I don’t know the details on HBO Max, but Roku May be the issue.

They’re still haggling with NBC about Peacock.

Roku wants to sell adds not just hardware.

But HBO is a mess in general.

HBO, HBO Go, HBO Now HBO Max.

Whatever I’m getting with this Amazon Subscription.

What’s the difference?
