2016 is when Samsung moved up to the kick-arse app interface.

Doesn't support fire devices as well. You can sideload, but that is not really supporting that device

He said to "use the service". You can easily load it, just from a provider other than Amazon-proper.

I've had no issue with it.

I have Apple TV and there is no HBO Max app for me. It’s an older AppleTV so I guess I’m just fricked.
Guess I’ll be cancelling HBO.
There is definitely a tvOS HBO Max app. If you have a 1st gen Apple TV, your gripe isn’t with HBO - it’s with Apple since they stopped supporting the pre-tvOS Apple TV’s and no longer roll out new apps.
Honestly if you’re planning on sticking with Apple TV, it’s worth the upgrade to the 4K. Screen resolution aside, the new Apple TV’s are light years better than the original.
As far as HBO Max goes, I didn’t even pay much attention to it until my HBO Go app prompted me to switch. I dive into HBO Max with no expectations one way of another, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much content is included.

Roku has always been a neutral platform, though that appears to be changing. But in an argument between Roku and AT&T (HBO Max) and Comcast (Peacock) I will side with Roku. AT&T and Comcast are just horrible and ruin everything they touch.

Not sure what you mean by neutral. Roku threatened to pull the FOX apps prior to FOX’s Super Bowl stream as a negotiation tactic.

I signed up early for HBO Max for my Roku TV, but after a month of no deal, I cancelled subscription. In interim I was able to watch HBO Now. But the silver lining is that I discovered the greatest movie channel for streaming that has been out for only a year...The Criterion Channel at $11/mo. So I'm over the HBO Max debacle at least until I run out of movies I want to watch on Criterion, which will be never.

Is money not neutral? But I don't know why we're talking about this business in such terms anyway. Maybe he meant neutral in terms of quality?

I think he meant neutral in the sense that Roku only really has one business model - streaming media devices. Contrast that with Amazon, who provides subscription content (Prime Video) and devices (fireTV) or AT&T, who provides content (Time Warner/HBO), internet service (both wired and wireless), and TV service (U-verse/DirectTV). Nowadays, Roku isn’t really neutral in that sense either given the ways they’ve been trying to grow revenue beyond hardware.
Ultimately the issue comes down to the fact that most of these companies have competing product lines and don’t want to help each other. The obvious example is AT&T - they have no desire to accelerate the cord-cutting movement, so they aren’t going to go out of their way to accommodate Roku or Amazon. But it also took forever to get a Prime Video app on Apple TV. So it’s not a particularly new issue.
Here’s the thing though: if Amazon and Roku are trying to force AT&T to offer HBO through their subscription services (Prime/Roku channels) rather than as an add-on to an existing cable package or a direct HBO subscription, they are effectively turning into cable providers in their own right. You’ll continue to see the same old disputes, just like when AT&T and CBS were at an impasse last year. Except now Amazon and Roku are in AT&T’s shoes, and AT&T is in CBS’s shoes.

I meant that Roku used to be a neutral platform for apps and offered the widest number of apps. Really wasn't difficult to get on their platform. Yes, starting with the Fox dispute that changed.
Still, AT&T and Comcast suck and they poison anything they touch.
I have HBO through cable simply because I keep forgetting to cancel it. I've been reminded now so I'll go ahead and cancel. I wanted to wait and try HBO Max but now I won't bother.

I’m not trying to white knight for AT&T here - lord knows I have my share of frustrations with them - but in this case it sounds like AT&T is pushing for HBO Max to be accessible through cable and/or HBO Now subscriptions while the streaming platforms want to manage it through their “channels” so that they get a cut if the subscription. That certainly seems to be the case for Amazon, at least.
If you have the ability to stream from an iPad or similar (e.g. AirPlay or Chromecast) you could always try it out on the iOS or Android app short term until they come to an agreement. Just a thought.

True. I always assume that most of the market that's using Roku devices are buying them because they have older TVs and it's a cheaper alternative than a new TV with internet apps.
No, not even close
I use external streaming devices on my new Samsung smart TVs, because the built in Samsung interface is slow AF and has limited apps

Sweet. I’ll stick one of extra 4K Fire Sticks on my garage tv since the Roku HBO support just ended
Edit: the current HBO app on fire tv is the old HBO Now app.... looks like I’ll be side loading HBO Max or now. I had been utilizing the HBO Go app while working out I the garage the last couple of months.
I just tried using the HBO Max app on one of my Samsung TVs. It is ok although I much prefer the Fire tv format as it gives me more flexibility with my audio settings

I sideloaded the HBO Max app on my Firestick, and love it.
I have a Yamaha AV receiver with a 7.1 setup, with the Contour, Firestick, and other stuff plugged into it, so I just have a cheap 4k tv (good picture), which is solely a monitor/display. A smart TV would be a PITA to set up with the surround sound. Considered adding an extra set of stuff to do Atmos, but I prefer the sound I have now.

The icon is different from the old hbo now one that was on firestick, when I opened it, it went straight to HBOmax. Today was the first time I saw it; I’ll admit, I haven’t watched a lot of it on the tv, and assumed they finally dropped the app.

I feel the same way.. I prefer to manage everything through my AV receiver and let my TV just be a TV. It’s just a cleaner setup than running everything through the TV’s inputs, and it can get cumbersome if you’re only using the audio return from the TV for its onboard apps.
