Is the first caveman that sung overrated? Through the lens of modern day, sure, but it basically built modern film making.

As others have mentioned, it's more known for technical breakthroughs than narrative. Deep focus photography, deep camera angle, showing a ceiling on a studio set, and the lighting were all seen as technical breakthroughs. I think it's also liked by critics because it's such a strong expression of auteur theory.

The narrative dies as soon as Susan enters the story. She's badly cast and the story spends with her instead of Kane. The opera scenes are really annoying.

Yep. Before 1941 no one knew how to tell a story.

Exactly.

Funny how "Gone with the Wind" was released in 1939 without Citizen Kane showing them how that whole movie making thing is done.

Sight and Sound had their list of Top 10 movies of all-time and Mulholland Drive was #8.

So I'd have to go with that mess of a movie as the most overrated.

They had Citizen Kane #3 , fwiw.

And a movie I've never heard of was #1.

Gone with the Wind is pretty straightforward and also one of the greatest films ever made. Citizen Kane is not straightforward and the narrative and editing weaves.

This.

It’s almost as if we have simpletons on this board who scored low on reading comprehension.

Citizen Kane’s narrative, with its non-linear storytelling, was pioneering for a mainstream film in 1941.

Subjective question.

As someone too logical to even begin to enjoy horror movies (just leave the area, avoid situations, etc) I find EVERY horror film is very overrated including classic Hitchcock movies. I would rather watch some chick flick Lifetime or Hallmark “C” tier movie.

Citizen Kane is remarkable and revolutionary in production and technical design but I don’t really enjoy it as entertainment.

Yeah, I don't think most people realize that Kane was the first movie that used a non-linear narrative structure as the basis of telling the story. The subject of Kane is his "Rosebud", which is his fall from innocence and his attempt to recover. This is why I think the Opera sequence is a mistake. It dwells too long on Susan, and it slows the telling of his decline. In contrast, Welles told the story of Kane and Emily's marriage a few shots and managed to make those shots wildly innovative. For me, the movie turns boring right after he yells "I'm Charles Foster Kane!!!"

In my opinion, Gone With The Wind is the most overrated. A 4 hour soap opera.

Compared to movies of the era, it is pretty incredible. Its influence and impact alone gives it a lot of credibility in GOAT movie conversations.

It’s not the most enjoyable movie to watch compared to what would come later, but what would come later without it?

ETA: obviously movies were going to keep progressing over time, but I do think the history of movies changes pretty dramatically without Citizen Kane
