AJ's family wasn't the most functional either and had a lot of death too but he grew up relatively rich and his dad kept most of the violence away from them. Considering his sister went on to make something ou
Yeah AJ also grew up with respect from others because he was Tony’s son. Much different than White.

It was hard to like Kim Bauer, Jack Bauer’s daughter on 24.

It all started with Eddie Haskell on the old "Leave It To Beaver" show played by Ken Osmond as the scheming, back-stabbing pretty unlikeable friend of Wally.
Then Billy Mummy in a few of the early "Twilight Zone" episodes where he was the precocious little brat that tormented the adults.
Fast forward to A.J. of "The Sopranos" with his constant whining, spoiled brat mentality and then the boy King on "G.O.T." with his repulsive treatment of most of the people around him and they have set the bar real high for least likeable child characters.

Both Kids on Ray Donovan. I just kept wanting someone to kill the daughter. In everything she plays in.

writers acknowledgment that they made AJ too obnoxious at the start of the show.
And the fact he had zero acting ability made it hard for them to pivot or expand the character at all.
Too many shows include family dynamics to add context or depth to the main characters and storylines at the beginning of a series, only to be weighed down by their dead weight as the series progresses.
The family members are co-stars of the show on day one, thus the show runners feel the need to have scenes and storylines featuring them shoehorned in throughout its run.

I always just looked at AJ's storyline as a necessary evil in the later seasons.
AJ was my least favorite part of the show but if you look at it as a clear display of Tony failing as a father no matter how much he says that everything he does is for his family then it makes sense. Even when Tony takes a stand and forces AJ to mature and grow up, he just ends up in another situation that makes him struggle with depression and lack of meaning.
