Blinded by his honor. He thought a piece of paper was power.

Well, had he done what anyone with common sense would do, and immediately rode off to find Robert when he discovered Geoffrey was illegitimate, and found Robert before his accident....... We'd be about 5 seasons short on content.

Instead he told Cerci he knew, like a retard... and here we are.

He isn't an idiot per say. He, like Cersie said, is just a soldier. Nothing more than that.

Out in the field, he could wreck shop. In the swamp of politics, he is useless.

Ned didn't want the blood of Cersei's children on his hands. He knew Robert would have murdered them all. This the same man who raised Jon Snow as his bastard so he wouldn't be murdered by Robert. These are not the acts of an idiot. These are the acts of an exceptionally decent man.

When Joffrey was pronounced king. He should've been like "That's cool, I'll be going now".

No. He was wise, just, and honorable. Unfortunately, being too honorable is what cost him his head. The only somewhat dishonorable thing he ever did (and it was for a good cause) was tell his wife he cheated on her just to hide Jon Snow's true parentage.

But he would never have done something like that.

These are the facts regarding fiction or real life. Some people have morals. Some have courage to do what is right.

Some people don't allow women to get beat repeatedly and do nothing is one example.

Ned would never allow something like Joffery to have control over his people.

Again, he wasn't an idiot. He was a soldier. Not a politician.

If he had any political skill at all, he would have backed the youngest Baratheon and we wouldn't have had a show to watch for the last few years.

It would have just been over.

The episode with Robb marrying his foreign whore was on HBO this morning.
I think Robb may be a bigger idiot than his father. Old Ned was just being his honorable, stupid self. But Robb was in open rebellion of the king and had his mother advising him what was at stake and he STILL blew it all to put pussy on a pedestal.

Ned Stark was a classic case of naïve underestimation of enemies. The truth is not enough when surrounded by a hostile environment. Ned's ill calculated honor cost him his life and ongoing hardship for his family. He should have thought about the very real potential repercussions before making a power play in said environment.

Having said this, this obviously one of the premises of Martin's book. Poor calculated honor can reap dire consequences in The Game of Thrones.
