Yes. People are blinded by how much they like him but he's a big dumb idiot that basically got his entire family slaughtered because he wanted to be noble

Robb was definitely an idiot for marrying Talisa instead of the Frey girl.

I think Robb may be a bigger idiot than his father. Old Ned was just being his honorable, stupid self. But Robb was in open rebellion of the king and had his mother advising him what was at stake and he STILL blew it all to put pussy on a pedestal.

Ehhhh............the daughter-fricker still would have turned on Robb at some point.

The marriage would have never been a problem if Catlyn didn't release the king slayer

She's the real villain of the stark family. Was glad to see her get got.

Let's not forget she trusted the man who betrayed her husband and essentially got him murdered like a couple weeks ago, and just releases the most coveted prisoner to the detriment of Robbs war effort, while entrusting a women to bring him back and demand the stark girls release. A women that sticks out like a massive sore thumb trying to go back to KL with the most recognizable knight in the 7 kingdoms

Even if Brienne gets Jamie back to KL unharmed and uninterrupted, do you think Tywin (the most cunning and ruthless war general in the world) would just go "oh okay cool, I'll let sansa go out of honor"

No, he would have Briennes head on a spike and would demand that Robbs kneel a pledge fielty to them to ensure their safety. And would likely keep Sansa as a Ward, much like the starks did with Theon to ensure that the North remained unrebellious

Her actions subsequently led to the starks losing the Karstarks as bannerman and forcing them to go back to the Twins to get the Freys into the fold which was the perfectly setup trap for them at the red wedding.

Ned is the prototypical Fairy Tale hero.

That was his purpose.

He is there to show you that in the real world, this is what happens to those that are pure and good and honorable.

How? Karstarks left because he beheaded their leader

Their leader got his head chopped off because he killed an innocent child

He killed an innocent child because Catlyn released Jaime and robbed the Karstarks of his justice (to take place after the war)

Robb didn't have much choice to not chop his head off. He's a king, how is he much different than Joffrey if he doesn't follow the honor code of his father and let a child murderer go unpunished

Cat was responsible for thousands of northern deaths including most of her own family. She's essentially the Stalin of the Northern part of Westeros.

He probably had the same sense of honor is father had. He banged a chick and then felt the only way to make it right was to marry her.

It was a certainly an unwise decision, but I think the betrayal would have occurred anyway. It was the Bolton's whom Tywin entrusted to rule the North and it was Roose Bolton who was cunning enough to implement the betrayal. I don't think Tywin Lannister would have entrusted such a plan solely to Walder Frey. Even if Robb had married the Frey girl, Roose would have attempted to betray him.

Yeah, Tywin & Roose were playing "long game" with that; it was a matter of time before Robb and/or Cat screwed up.

Seriously.

Even if the Frey girl had ended up ugly like most of Walders daughters, it's not like he couldn't have just kept right on fricking Talisa and any other girl he felt like fricking.

Hell, probably could have even married her and secured the The Twins and the Frey army and then just killed his new wife and Walder a couple weeks later..... but nooooo, Starks have to be all fricking honorable and good

Funny that geniuses watching a show or reading a book has facts from all kinds from various characters. Ned had no idea of the total plot like viewers/readers. Nor saw the future that we all know.

I'd say the show is pretty well reflective of real life with regard to this.

70-80% of people in real life are morons. So it is a good balance on the show. I mean how many truly smart people are represented?

Tyrion
Varys
Cersei
Little Finger

He should have known that Cersei wouldn't flee with her children and would have Robert or him killed. From Ned's perspective she already offed Jon Arryn. That one was very stupid.

Cersei

Cersei isn't all that intelligent, and I'd say is easily the dumbest of the main Lannister clan. Cersei simply got lucky with Ned, and the Sept of Baelor was more Qyburn's doings cleaning up Cersei's ridiculous frick-ups. She thinks she's the smartest person on the planet, but is just incredibly delusional. She's been totally outplayed by everyone other than Ned Stark.

As for some other smart ones:

Euron
Asha
Arya
Lord Manderly
Davos
Stannis
Queen of Thorns
Ramsay
Roose
Tywin
Qyburn
Aemon
Pycelle
Lame Lothar
Sam
Randyl Tarley
Mance Rayder

All of these I'd comfortably put above Cersei, among others.
