He saves the girl and retrieves the Ark. That's a pretty good movie's work right there.

Would the girl have needed saving if she didn't go with Indy? The Nazi's would have found Marion either way and they might have just paid her for the Headpiece and moved on.

The deal was to find the Ark and the Museum gets it which didn't happen.

For that matter, the other 2 movies, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade - what changed because of those movies?

I mean, Indy returned the stones to the village and freed all of the kids.

Lots of Indy hate in this thread, and I can't say that I like it very much.

Fair point. Now do Last Crusade.

Raiders and Last Crusade are great films, regardless of these quibbles. Temple of Doom is underrated (mainly because the tone was so jarring, IMHO). Lighten up, Cokes.

Well, this is only relevant to the Jones family but their decades of research, note taking, and hard work was rewarded by realizing that they were right and ultimately did find the grail's resting place. They saw and experienced somethign few humans on earth ever have. They got a bad guy killed in an awesome way. Indy and Dad are immortal maybe? Idk.

So yeah, the contrarian view of "begining of the movie the grail was lost. End of movie it's still lost" is technically correct but the opinion of "if indy never existed nothing would be different at all" isn't really accurate.

The discussions we have about fictional characters is strange at times, wouldn't you agree?

I think the entire point of both Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade is that the Nazis were attempting to mess with powers that mankind was not meant to have. A better question would be, "Why did the Americans make no attempt to use the Ark themselves after retrieving it?" For the movie to exist we have to assume that the US military was at least a little concerned about what would happen if the Nazis managed to get their hands on the Ark, or otherwise they wouldn't waste time and money mounting an expedition to retrieve it. If, after the end of the movie, Jones contacted them and told them, "Yeah, the Nazis found the Ark, but, uh, they opened it and nothing happened so they just left it sitting on this island," in an effort to keep the power of the Ark concealed, then why would the government even bother going to get it at all? Indy and his museum could have had it. But, on the other hand, if Jones told them what actually happened, then why wouldn't they try using it themselves? At least after the start of the Second World War, if not immediately. I mean, in real life there were some scientists legitimately concerned that the Trinity nuclear test was going to set the atmosphere on fire and destroy the world, so it isn't like "messing with powers man was not meant to wield" was going to stop them from trying to figure out a surefire way to win the war.

"use it" how? You mention them trying to win the war with it but how would that actually play out in reality? Just set the arc out in the middle of a field with a note for the enemies to open it up and peek inside?

I'd like to think that the american decision makers respected the Bible enough, and Jones' retelling of what happened out there (along with the evidence of the pile of bodies when reinforcements came to teh island) enough, to realize that it would probably be best for all of humanity to not frick with it anymore. And that the absolute safest place for it was in an american facility under lock and key where nobody else could touch it.

Remember at the beginning when Jones is talking to the guvmint sp00ks he tells them that the Bible says that an army with the Ark at its head would be invincible, and that presumably this is what the Nazis were after. Why wouldn't they try that?

Here's the scene:

Indy and Marcus talk to the G-men about the Ark

The Nazi's were way ahead of the Feds on this....

If Indy had just said he found the Ark and stole it from the Nazi's the Museum gets it but he tells them what happened and the Gov't realized some things just need to be tucked away like they do on Warehouse 13.

Well if Indy hadn’t blown up the German plane they would have flown the ark back to Germany. That’s a role in the outcome.

Right. It would've went to Berlin and likely been opened in front of Hitler. If I recall, that was the plan all along and they only opened it first at the sub pen because they now had the opportunity to do so.

Right, that's what I've always thought too. They wanted to harness its power and use it to dominate the world.

Are we certain the plane was heading to Berlin? I'm under the belief that Belloq would have that flight sent to that island where he carried out the ritual before shipping it to Berlin. He has this planned out. He had a completely different agenda to the Nazi's.
