Sony and Fox are going to begin crosspromoting between Spider-Man and X-Men.

SPOILER FOR SPIDER-MAN IN CREDITS SCENE

quote:

The reason, Variety has learned, is that “Spider-Man” director Marc Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight to helm another film following 2009's “500 (Days) of Summer.” After “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012, Webb’s negotiations briefly stalled with Sony as he was caught in a tug-of-war with Fox. Eventually, Fox agreed to allow Webb to direct Sony’s “Spider-Man” sequel, but only if Sony would promote its “X-Men” film for free.

You mean the same Captain Marvel who DC went after for copyright infringement? He's important?

DC sued Fawcett b/c they were getting their asses kicked in sales. Captain Marvel was the highest selling comic of the Golden Age.

The character and the extended universe also had massive cultural impact. From being the first comic super hero put on film, to Elvis emulating Captain Marvel Jr's outfits, to phrases like "shazam" and "holy moly" becoming commonly used.

I'm lucky in that I've always been an Avengers (and Avengers members in their solo books) fan so I've gotten most of the characters I like. As a kid I think the first book I followed was Thor, followed shortly by Captain America, Iron Man, and then Spidey and Daredevil. And of course Avengers, both the then current adventures and reprints of their early ones in Marvel Triple Action. And Hawkeye is probably my favorite individual character.

Agree. My favorite Avengers are Cap (surprise!), Thor and Vision. And it looks like I'll get all three, so I'm good there. But it seems like Marvel wants to create a whole line of films (and shows) expanding the universe, so I'm just speculating.

quote:

Dr. Strange might work but they'd have to make sure they did the right movie for him.

Agree. I've said since the beginning, if they can do GotG well, then they can do whatever they want. That's their measuring stick.

quote:

Wonder Man, while I thought he was an OK character, I don't know about a movie with him (especially with his buddy Beast being with another studio).

Agree. But I think his character is a lot of fun.

quote:

Moon Knight never appealed to me

You're missing out. Granted he started out clearly as a Batman rip off, he really came into his own over the years and his current run is pretty awesome.

quote:

Mockingbird I always found blah.

Agree, but I think with what they've done, they could use her well. Again, that's just in the absence of Black Widow, needing a female presence. The only other major females would be Janet, She-Hulk, Scarlet, and Spider-Woman (popular ones at least). I don't see most of those making it on screen actually.

quote:

Now if I was to indulge what I'd like to see - I'd really love a Champions movie. But then again, Angel and Iceman are with other studios, Hercules who knows (I guess he's public domain?), I'm not sure who owns the rights to Ghost Rider. Black Widow would be available though.

That would be super fun. I think Herc could work, they'd have to toy with his origin though, and obviously need replacements for the mutants.

quote:

Now, I would love to see Power Man/Luke Cage. (if Iron Fist was part of the movie I'd be ok with that but I'd be fine if he was left out too).

They would be my top 2, especially Cage, but they are getting their own show, so we're covered there.

I'll give this to the DC (or really Fawcett) version of Captain Marvel. He has one of the best visual presentations in comics. His costume is classic and yet unique at the same time.

I always thought his origin was kind of lame.

Can't say how his stories were other than I tried a couple of his book and other DC books when I was first starting to read comics. But to me they just didn't come close to what Marvel was doing at that particular time.

So DC is just as underhanded right?

I wouldn't argue a word of that, you're right. Legally, Marvel did the right thing. The name also makes sense for Marvel and all that jazz. But really, do you think Marvel knew that DC would buy the rights 4 years later and bring back Shazam? That's the only case where it would be nefarious or wrong. And even then that's a stretch. They used a name that makes complete sense, from a property and company that were almost 20 years dead.

No. DC had a valid case, since C.C. Beck was instructed to create a Superman knockoff for Fawcett. (Which he did, right down to having Cap lifting a car a la Superman on Action #1).

If someone copied your product and was beating you in sales with it, you'd call your lawyer.

It sucked for comic readers to lose the Marvel Family, but DC did what any company would do.

(DC copied characters as well, but they wound up as backups and didn't do well enough to draw suits from other companies. Mort Weisinger was famous for "creating" new characters... Green Arrow/Golden Arrow, Aquaman/Namor, Johnny Quick/Flash, etc.)

Fawcett had some of the best creators in the business. C.C. Beck, Otto Binder, Kurt Schaffenberger, Mac Raboy...) When Fawcett folded, Otto Binder moved to DC and created the Superman family of characters (Supergirl, Legion of Super-Heroes, Krypto, Brainiac, the Phantom Zone, Lucy Lane, etc.) Schaffenberger created the signature look for Lois Lane.

Right, that's what I'm saying. They didn't do anything wrong, neither did Marvel.

Exactly. Everyone copies. Nothing new.

Yeah, everybody seems to ave been stealing way back then. Some of these comics pioneers come across as pretty Shady characters. Martin Goodman, who founded Timely, the precursor to Marvel.operated through multiple shell companies and kinds of fun stuff.

But yeah, I agree that Captain Marvel fits at Marvel because of the name. They did have a bit of trouble settling on which character would get the name though.

The most natural things to do would be for Marvel to obtain and reboot Fantastic Four and Spider Man and bring them unto the universe. If only.

I want to see Apocalypse, Mephisto and Mr Sinister. I'm tired of Loki and stoked about Thanos.

Prob wouldn't translate well to film, but I've always liked the heavenly characters like Celestials, Galactus, and Watcher.

Marvel Studios owns Ghost Rider now, so maybe we'll see a REAL Blackheart instead of the emo goth shite in the last Ghost Rider movie.

My personal #1 would be Deadpool. (Must be an R rated action/comedy)

quote:

The Deadpool movie could start with Wade Wilson recovering after putting his own head back on, though while he’s recovering, his implants and powers start backfiring and giving him a rapidly growing case of cancer. The rejection of the implants, which his body literally pushes out rather painfully, combined with the rejection of most of his powers, including the teleporting and optic blast, sends him into a period of extreme pain which after a while cracks his mind. He emerges physically deformed and literally insane as he seeks out help.

Deadpool will start talking to the audience, unable to grasp the idea that nobody’s there, as others start to notice that he’s gone mentally ill and he begins to realize it himself. The mental hospital he checks into ends up transferring him to a secret ward for violent psychopaths and he ends up tortured by Dr. Killebrew. Deadpool escapes with an unwitting scientist buddy he simply calls Weasel, and takes an old woman hostage just for companionship. Needing a disguise and not wanting the world to see his face, he grabs a red and black costume out of a closet full of wetsuits and simply calls it his own. The woman he kidnaps turns out to be Blind Alfred, and Deadpool starts settling in with the revelations of what’s happened.

Eventually he discovers someone from his past, a mystic named T-Ray, is trying to kill him and he goes on the run again, this time with a teleporting device Weasel made for him. He soon meets Chris Summers, also known as Cable, who traveled back to time to help him destroy T-Ray, and then reveals he has other plans for Wade Wilson in the future.

Maybe that, or Loki enlists the help of Lorelei (introduce in Agents of SHIELD) or Enchantress, to try to control him.

But apparently Stark not only has Hulk-buster armor, but a set of armor to neutralize each of the Avengers. That's part of the theory surounding Ultron's MCU origin.

Admittedly, in a world where people are pining for solo Marvel movies featuring the likes of Black Widow and Doctor Strange, there are very few people out there hoping for a Rom movie, or even a cameo by the Spaceknight.

The alien cyborg Rom had his own comic book title from 1979 until 1986 and became a regular face in the Marvel universe — often showing up in other titles. So it was easy to forget that Rom was based on a Parker Brothers toy that very few people purchased. When Marvel Studio head Kevin Feige was recently promoting ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ I asked him if there’s even a chance we might ever see Rom, even as a cameo. I mean, who thought we’d ever see a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ movie? The news is not good for Rom fans.

Is there a chance of ever having a Rom cameo? What happened to Rom?

I think there are legal issues with Rom. I think Rom is owned by a toy company or something.

That’s disappointing.

I think we have Spaceknights, but we don’t have Rom. I think they did some standalone Spaceknights comics at some point. ROM, I believe, was a licensed deal. Like G.I. Joe and Transformers back in the day.

I see.

Sorry!

10 lingering questions still to be answered in the MCU. Unfortunately, it's a slide show. I've only looked at the first two so far and they as where is Red Skull, and what happened to Samuel Sterns, which I know is of particular speculatory interest to some of the folks in this thread. Article is from April 9th, so some of you may have read it already.

I am not sure about the Marvel Cinematic Universe but I have a feeling that with Loki's staff in the hands of Hydra (as seen in Captain America: The Winter Solider mid credit scene) I think that Phil Coulson and company from Agents of Shield will be given the assignment to hunt that staff down and will serve as the major story arc of next season. The ending of Agents of Shield Season 2 would fall in line for the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron

interesting article that brings up many questions I've had (especially the loose ends from Incredible Hulk) but the last one about Coulson makes me wonder if the author even watches the show.
quote:

The mystery of Agent Coulson's resurrection has unfolded over the course of the first season of the series Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D, but any details about his discoveries don’t seem to be bugging anyone in the big-screen Marvel Universe. Either they don’t know that Agent Coulson is still alive, or they simply don’t really care. Coulson has seen Lady Sif since his death – perhaps she didn’t think to tell Thor that the Son of Coul is still alive? (maybe she didn’t even know he was dead). If Clark Gregg’s character returns to the big screen in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, hopefully there will be at least one awkward scene where everyone has to deal with the fact that Coulson survived Loki’s stabbing.

dafaq? She was clearly shocked to see Coulson alive and asked what sorcery had brought him back from the dead. She doesn't tell Thor b/c Coulson asks her not to as he believes he should tell Thor in person. Since Sif heavily believes in honor she agreed to not tell Thor.

as for the Red Skull, I know Hugo Weaving has said somethign in the press about being reluctant (at best) about returning to the role btu int eh end I would be surprised if they couldn't get him to do it at least one more time.

If they recast him I assume that fake face thing that Black Widow wore near the end of TWS would be how they explain it away.

I had the same exact thought when I read that part. I don't think lapses in memory should count as "lingering questions".
