When I saw The Revenant in theaters I was simply blown away....and it still is an incredible feat of filmmaking and probably one of the best 3 or 4 movies made in the past 5 yrs........BUT

I just saw Jeremiah Johnson on TCM the other night and as much as love It, The Revenant has nowhere near the depth or rewatchability as The Redford/Pollack 1972 masterpiece.

There's not a scene in The Revenant close to this one. LINK

In hindsight DiCaprio is also incredibly overacting and in no way has he ever come across to me as a badass....in fact I think Hardy should have been Glass and DiCaprio as the weasley dude who left him for dead.

This guy, though......now thats another story.....

Jeremiah Johnson all day

Revenant’s 3rd act was horrid. Technically marvelous, but painfully mediocre movie

If you think about this; it makes total sense. DiCaprio would have changed Hardy's character into some souless wealthy smartass who is just going by the orders of the company.

And Hardy would be Leo's character as some outcast hardass left for dead. Expendable help. But who is a real trapper and can survive unlike DiCaprio and his pretender company group.

Company men vs. survivalist. And maybe they watch him get mauled because they already have the pelts and don't want to have to pay him.

And he wakes up totally confused and makes it back to camp and he can't fully remember what happend but everyone treats him likes he's just part of the team and gives him his pay...but as he's leaving, he sees something that reminds him of his fellow trappers laughing as he gets mauled...ala Eastwood in High Plains Drifter...and they just watch him.

And that's when Hardy knows. And that's when the movie begins.

I place the Revenant in the firmly OK category. I didn’t care for DiCaprio’s performance and thought the whole mystical Indian bullshite to be tiring.

The Revenant was a perfectly decent movie. Jeremiah Johnson is a masterpiece.

The delivery of "Didn't put enough dirt down... saw it, right off" was one of the classic understated lines in movie history.

It's one of the most rewatchable movies ever for me. I have no idea how many times I've seen it, and I cannot look away if I find it on TV.

Jeremiah Johnson would be in that Shawshank/RoadHouse/GreenMile rewatch rotation if they aired it more often.

I DVR it every time that it's on TCM or elsewhere.

I’ve always wondered who that was a gif of, never had a clue it was Robert Redford.

I watched JJ the other day as well. Probably the first time since HS that I've watched it from start to finish. Such a great flick.

eehhh I don't know... I love the classics and Jeremiah Johnson was a good one but The Revenant was a total bad arse movie for me. I put it before JJ.

i don't agree with all of that, specifically it being one of the best movies in the past 5 years, but completely agree with this...

he was my main issue with it all along, and why i hold that above opinion. it is a gorgeous movie to watch and listen to however. in that sense i would agree it's one of the best in the last 5 years or so.

Where does Man in the Wilderness fall in this comparison?

I remember watching it on TV as a kid and was blown away by what he went through. It's another version of the Revenant story.

TCM showed JJ, and Man in the Wilderness back-to-back a couple of nights ago. I fell asleep before MITW ended. There was a third "Wilderness" movie either before, or after these two.

I watch JJ at least once a year. Hadn't seen MITW in probably 10 years. It's not even Richard Harris' most bad arse Wilderness/Western from the early 70's. A Man Called Horse, came out a year earlier. It's better to me.

I check TCM's schedule nearly every day. Much of this month has sucked because they've got musicals on a couple of days a week. They've been showing a bunch of Tarzan movies every Saturday too. Not Greystoke, or the one with Bo Derek, we're talking the Buster Crabbe, and Johnny Weissmuller, ones from the 30'a and 40's. Seen one, you've seen them all.

Check TCM at least twice a week for upcoming flicks. Usually Tuesdays and Saturdays seem to be their best nights, but sometimes they'll play something incrdible at like 3 am, usually a Clockwork Orange or something graphic. It's my favorite channel by far

Wasn't there a Charles Bronson movie where he was an unknown 1800s dude who supposedly killed a guy but really didn't and he was on the run the whole time in the wildeness and outlasted the search party because he was a badass?
