Seems like in S1 and 2 they were overly nice to each other in their interactions and it wasn't nearly as funny as later seasons when they were complete jerks.

To me, Seinfeld has never been LOL funny...more of a peaceful, sarcastic, mindless funny that leaves a constant smirk on your face
Perfect description. Other shows are laugh out loud funnier: Family Guy, The Office, Community, Parks and Rec, Married with Children, Archer... but Seinfeld has it’s place. And I love the 90s vibe.

Are the earlier seasons just 'meh' and the later ones get better?
The show really does find its stride around Season 3 or 4, but if you're not impressed by it already, you're not going to be all that impressed - it's not like the show "grows" - it's a dadgum ole show about nothin', baw.

Hot Tub is tGOAT
Puerto Rican Day Parade is a pretty meh episode IMO. Gets sensationalized since its so rare.
The Chinese restaurant is probably my least favorite since I’ve seen it more than any, plus no Kramer in that one.

One of the problems with people who go in completley blind to seinfeld is they start from S1E1 and want to work their way through. And I mean hey, that's only natural right? But with juuuuuust about any show ever, it takes time to find its legs. Watch a S2 episode and a S8 episode and it's like they're not even the same show. The writing, the quality, the stories, the chemistry, it's all copmletley different.
If someone wants to start from the beginning then that's fine, but they should be aware that it doesn't take off into GOAT status until it hits its stride. S1 is pretty lousy if I'm beign honest with myself. S2 is better and has a few good ones but still largely meh. Season 3 is when it first starts to really find its way, and S4 and on is all time elite status sitcom. I can honestly say that from S4-S9 to the very end there is not one bad/down episode. And that's quite a feat for a 30 minute network sitcom.

Good thing about season 1 is it’s short. Once it hits stride you get all the wacky storylines coming together at the end of each episode and that’s what makes it so great.

I think getting into Seinfeld today is harder than it was when it originally aired. When it first aired, it was cutting edge TV, and had a formula that had never really been done in TV sitcoms before. How they turned the everyday mundane into such absurdity was fresh and funny.
And as has been said though, the first 2 seasons are pretty bad, the first one especially. It's one of those shows where you can just pick random shows from seasons 3 on and not really miss anything. There are a few recurring bits, but nothing all that important to the show's enjoyment. Season 7 is probably the best one, IMO. There's not a single weak episode that entire season.

Also, what is funny subtly changes over time. Even non-topical humor is still making fun of social mores as they exist at the time. It is only natural that comedy doesn't usually age that well. The fact that Seinfeld is still funny at all speaks to how well written it is. But it isn't as funny as it once was because the world has changed.
Also, groundbreaking shows never age well, because what was groundbreaking about them gets co-opted and becomes the norm, so it no longer seems radical to modern eyes.

One of the things that I like the most about Seinfeld is that minor things happen to me in everyday life and I instantly think of that particular episode. For example, one of my friends talks very softly and I can never hear what he's saying when we meet for a happy hour.

I agree, the early seasons fall flat but that's not what people remember the show for anyway.

When George ran out of the birthday party because he thought the place was on fire and knocked over a little old lady and little kids in his way.........I actually turned red in embarrassment......IMHO thats good writing and good acting...

It’s very simple. There are two types of people in this world. Those who like Seinfeld and those who don’t.
The people who don’t, have not given it enough time to actually “get it”. To get the pay off in Seinfeld takes time. It’s an investment. Each episode comes together perfectly in the end. Most of the “I don’t like Seinfeld crowd” are the same people who like cheap humor with little intellect required.
