What a way to placate your target audience.

One of the most ruthless, sociopaths and cold as ice characters to ever appear on screen.

Should obviously be higher.

I really like the TV version of Lector. I'm sure they only allowed one incarnation of a character but that character is the textbook definition of villain

But he's not the antagonist. He's just a super creepy guy that helps Clarice find the actual antagonist, Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill would appear on my list, but Lector would not. He's not a top 10 villain simply by the definition. He's villainous, sure, but he's not the villain. You might could use other Lector stories to say he's the antagonist, but not Silence of the Lambs.

AFI's made more sense.

1. Dr. Hannibal Lecter
2. Norman Bates
3. Vadar
4. Wicked Witch of the West
5. Nurse Ratched
6. Mr. Potter (this is still a great choice, he represents the evil corporate bastards...who started the downfall.)
7. Alex Forrest (athletes probably have her #1)
8. Phyllis Dietrichson (cold as hell)
9. Regan MacNeil (The Devil! It's the damn devil)
10. The Evil Queen

Honorable mention: HAL 9000

That doesn't necessarily make him a villain though.

Well yeah but he is certainly no hero as the poster implied

It's amazing how underrated Buffalo Bill is. He's way more memorable than a lot of others on this list.

I know. It drives me fricking insane how people forget about him. All I hear about is Lector being the greatest villain ever, when he isn't even the fricking antagonist in the film they're all referring to. Instead, they all ignore someone who is way more terrifying and creepy than Lector is in Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill is way more horrifying.

Whenever I bring up why Buffalo Bill is a better villain and far worse than Lector is, it goes into one ear and out the other. No, Hannibal Lector isn't in Top 10 Greatest Villains ever. He may barely make the Top Hundred. But Buffalo Bill? frick yeah, he's way up there.

If he were the one villain, he'd be huge with more screen time.

But Silence makes it complicated and muddles who the real villain is.

Granted Buffalo Bill had become a pop-culture icon and quoting him and in skits on TV has been hugely popular.

I mean..."it puts the lotion in the basket, it does this whenever it's told" was quoted for so many movie-goers from the 90's on.

Silence had more pubic catch-phrase stuff than people remember. The movie was so huge...everyone had read the book...it was a crazy time.

Agree with all of that. Hopkins was simply incredible as Lector, but it was a small role and I never found him to be scary. Bill, on the other hand, was freaking terrifying. I always do his goodbye horses dance routine to my wife, she hates it Just an awesome villain.

But you guys forget what makes Lecter a top villain is that he was genius...and highly educated.

And yet he ended up sinking into base instincts. He was a fallen star...because he was totally insane, despite how logical he could be.

Which is the scariest thing...a psychopath who can be totally logical and normal and then just rip you apart and feed your brain to you.

Buffalo Bill was just a moron wanna-be trans. He had no cunning, no real intellect.

He is the one villain though. You just remember Lector because he had more screen time. If solely take no in Silence of the Lambs, then he's not the villain by definition.

Maybe with the other cops, but not with the protagonist Clarice. Lector does not pose a threat to her directly and actually assists her.

But people who say "Hannibal Lector is the greatest villain of all time" by default don't give Buffalo Bill his due. It's people jacking off to Hannibal and how creepy he is just make Buffalo Bill an aside and just say the lotion scene. Buffalo Bill is worse than Lector. Lector is just creepy who is invested in things that interest him.

By that definition, Shelock Holmes and Batman are villains.

None of this means he's the villain.

None of this means he's the villain either.

So? Does a person have to be cunning to be a villain? Does he have to be smart to be terrifying? No. Buffalo Bill was unstable as frick and my absolute worst nightmare to be trapped with. I'd rather be trapped in a room with a Xenomorph than in a well with Buffalo Bill.

Star Trek - Khan (presumably they mean real Khan, not fake Khan) at 35 is criminally low - should be Top 5 or Top 8 at the very minimum.

And speaking of Star Trek - no Q? Gul Dukat?

Rubbish list is rubbish.

Buffalo wasn't a pro. He was trash.

Lecter was the scary intellect gone insane.

Look at who we revel in these top lists. They all have mostly accomplished something before being evil.

Buffalo Bill could be seen as just another run-of-the-mill serial killer.

Lecter was the intriguing character...because he was once a star and very accomplished and of course, he was smart.

Smart villains always carry more cache. Because they can charm...and then you don't expect dread. Vadar was one note - he didn't charm - he just strangled people - but he had a story that would come, and he had the biggest mystery in the history of cinema...

Buffalo Bill hid from the movie.

The scariest thing in movies is people in our society...who produce but have that evil side.

Like the Nurse or Hannibal...The Nurse is the worst, she is supposed to help you and does everything in her power to fry you...out of spite.
