Absolutely not, nor would anyone who was involved in that film say something like this.

That's a silly assertion, as if you know everyone that worked on the film and their thoughts and beliefs. If you disagree, fine I can respect your opinion, but don't just make stuff up to suit your argument.

I really don't think I'm saying anything all that outlandish. Lucas said this back in 1977 about comparing Star Wars to 2001:

quote:

Stanley Kubrick made the ultimate science fiction movie, and it is going to be very hard for someone to come along and make a better movie, as far as I'm concerned. On a technical level, it can be compared, but personally I think that '2001' is far superior.

"Far superior". That's what the man had to say about his own film that just became the highest grossing blockbuster of all time and was nominated for Best Picture.

I really don't think that really anyone worth a damn has made a sci fi movie and thought to themselves they topped 2001. It is highly revered, and aside from Metropolis, I don't think you'll have many other directors, writers, and producers saying otherwise that 2001 isn't the greatest sci-fi movie ever made. I like Empire more and it did better at dramatic storytelling, but it is fantasy, not science fiction. 2001 is everything a science fiction movie should be, so it is the better science fiction film. No one involved in Star Wars I doubt would have the balls to say otherwise.

2001 will always be a movie that just doesn't appeal to me. I know people love it and it's supposed to be a GOAT, but something just doesn't do it for me.

Predator will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first R rated movie I saw.

Terminator 2 is the GOAT sci-fi for me.

Some loose definitions of the genre.

Not as loose as Sci-Fi Channel's definition.
They've been showing Big (1988) and the Bourne movies.

But my belief that The Empire Strikes Back, the number 3 movie on the list mind you, could be the best was so outlandish you felt compelled to post "absolutely not"? That was just too radical an idea to even be considered?

That was my point. It's your belief, not a fact. Michael Jordan wouldn't say he was the best player ever probably, doesn't mean he doesn't believe he is.

Because it's not Science Fiction. It's Science Fantasy. Star Wars is a fantasy, not sci-fi. Sci-fi really needs to address the conditions of humanity at large and be a major study of who we are. Star Wars is just a fun time at the movies. It will never do anything close to "Eternal Sunshine".

2001 is the Michael Jordan though. No one cites Empire as being a revolutionary sci-fi film. It's a revolutionary sequel in terms of how the sequel should compare to its predecessor, but that goes through many genres. As far as sci-fi is concerned, Empire changed nothing.

So, you homos finally got a list that ranks Empire above Star Wars. shite, you finally got a list on which Empire appears. Congratulations.

I see the "________ isn't really sci fi" argument is in full swing, as well as the tearing down of the #1 choice, so I'll adjourn to my quarters, but the fact that Hunger Games is even on this list should tell you everything you need to know about the list.

You can't be discussing a specific list of Sci Fi movies that has it listed and then use the stance it isn't Sci Fi. That's cheating lol. Seriously man, I'm just giving you a hard time. I understand 2001 is a masterpiece and probably deserves to be listed first. Personally, I prefer TESB, but to each his own. You are correct about MJ though, he was the best. Anyway, I got to head out to go watch some Thrones, have a good one.

I can, because I've said specifically why these films aren't sci-fi. Seriously, Gravity's rough plot could happen at any given time. Just have one satellite collide into another, and astronauts will have to escape. That's just not sci-fi. When a list has that on it, I have every right to debate the validity of the list as a whole.

Empire isn't a science fiction film. It's pure fantasy. It meets all the criteria for that. A movie taking place in space is not a criteria for a science fiction film. Science Fiction films can take place in the modern era, but they put humanity at large in bizarre circumstances and have us question the nature of our existence. Gravity and Empire don't do this.

Great start. good middle. Horrible slasher film ending.

It shouldn't even be 57. Wasted opportunity.

Gattaca, Brazil, and Children of Men should be top ten. 12 Monkeys should be at least top 20. Dark Star is the worst movie I've ever seen. Total Recall should be wayyyy higher. Aliens is too high. Pi too low.

We should seriously have a M/TV board ranking of sci-fi movies.

We've done this already. Cocomo has the link.

2001 was #1, and I'm pretty sure Brazil or Blade Runner were 2. But I could be wrong.

I read the book and totally enjoyed it-even love the YES version-ha.

But I just thought it was totally overacted, silly and came off as a Sci Fi channel movie.
IMO....

That's kind of the point of the satire aspect of it. It actually has almost the exact opposite message as the book, although I completely did not get that as a kid. Heinlein probably would have been pissed if he had ever seen the movie.
