Starship troopers ahead of Galaxy Quest, The Matrix,a nd The Fifth Element? Count me as one that finds Starship Troopers entertaining but no fricking way does it beat those other 3

None of the top ten would even exist without Metropolis. It's the most influential science fiction movie ever made.

To many honor movies on the Sci-Fi list.
Metropolis is good, your forgetting books influenced the sci-fi movies far more, most of the late 20's and 30's books and sci-fi articles are not made into movies until the 1950's and 60's.

Inception is the most underrated one on the list.

starship troopers is a whole lot deeper and more subversive than it appears at first glance. It's not about bugs and spaceships, at all. the source material is science fiction royalty and the direction PV took it is brilliant
the acting is cheesy because it's supposed to be
give it another watch
plus...Dina Meyer's boobs

Also Gravity doesn't belong on the list whatsoever. Not that it's a bad movie, there's just nothing sci-fi at all about it. It's just a thriller that takes place in space. People are currently living in space. It's no more sci-fi than Cast Away.

Pretty good list all in all, though a few head scratchers. I realize TFA wasn't the most original movie ever, but 89th best Sci-Fi? Come on now. No way I'd have Robocop all the way up to 12th. Also, while I understand 2001 getting love to be #1 due to being so groundbreaking and thought provoking, it's not the first movie I'd watch if you gave me the option. The Empire Strikes Back probably should be the top movie.

So.....science fiction? It's a fictional story, set in space, about an astronaut who is trying to find her way home. That qualifies as science fiction.

No, it doesn't. If you want to get to the heart of it something like star wars isn't science fiction either. It's fantasy that happens to be set in space. At the heart of science fiction there is a conjecture about how an advance either sociological or technological would affect a human circumstance and to speculate how people would react. You can't just take contemporary circumstances and call it science fiction. Science fiction is by definition more cerebral.
Here's the dictionary definition that comes up when you google science fiction:
Gravity is not by any definition actually science fiction.

No. Space is a physical location we know exists and humans currently inhabit. It's like saying that since it takes place on a beach and a scientist is trying to find their way home that that counts as Science Fiction. I don't think you can mark out a single part of the movie for being sci-fi. Stars Wars, while really Science Fantasy, at least has some things grounded in sci-fi. Science Fiction at its core is questioning humanity, our place in the universe, and where we could be heading. Gravity is none of this.

Absolutely not, nor would anyone who was involved in that film say something like this. Empire is Fantasy set in space. It doesn't question humanity or consciousness as a whole. 2001 is the top slot, with only Metropolis being the other contender.

While 2001 may not be the most exciting or entertaining, 2001 exemplifies perfectly the best of what science fictions tries to be. At its core science fiction tries to be profound and meaningful. It wonders about all the possibilities that are out there. I don't know anyone who tried to bring film making more into the realm of art than Kubrick (in the mainstream at least), and that's why a movie like 2001 sits at the top of the science fiction heap.

This is correct. And neither are half the movies on the list. The Thing (look, it's a Top 3 film for me...ever....but true science fiction film it is not), Star Wars (any of them), Alien, etc.
Science Fiction is going to be things like 2001, Solaris, The Matrix (not in the Top 5 is a HUGE oversight), Stalker (its absence is unforgivable), 12 Monkeys, etc.
The list kind of stinks for a genre list. Half the films aren't actually science fiction and it misses big on some truly great films.

As usual, The Thing (1982) is way overrated. The original The Thing is way underrated (and not even on the list).
