I think he is quoted as saying he is to old to play bond. I think he is right but I would have loved to see it.

Just doesn’t look like a Bond to me.
Now that’s a Bond. I think Cavill is a good enough actor for Bond. I liked him a lot in Man from UNCLE in which he played a spy. And according to Wikipedia he was strongly considered for Bond before Daniel Craig got it when they decided to go with an older Bond.

Admittedly I'm forming my opinion based on his performance as Superman (which I hated). Maybe he isn't so terrible in other roles.

Hiddleston can pull it off, not sure about Cavill. He has the looks, but personality and body language wise he doesn’t really cast right.

I like Idris Elba too. He's a good actor, and I have no problem with him playing a different MI6 agent other than 007. There's been talk in recent years of making Bond black, reimagining the character as a woman, making him bisexual, etc. but none of it has happened yet. That's not to say that it won't at some point in the future.
Wasn't there talk of making Damien Lewis the next Bond? He was great in Homeland.
