That's probably b/c it seems like the writers and directors of game movies seem to have never even played the game and have an open disdain for key elements of their storylines and characters.

It's not all that different than what used to always happen to comic movies TBH.

The Halo short films were fantastic. Even the animated flick about the Spartan program was fairly enjoyable. You almost need to start at Combat Evolved and work in flashbacks for backstory.

Yeah the games aren't the problem, its the writers and directors of the movies that ruin them. Plenty of games have good stories that should easily translate to movies.

Watched it for the first time last night, actually.

That singing scene was awful.

I watched it Saturday.
Just terrible.
They wasted a great cast on this trash.

The problem is they focused too much on the present day character and Abstergo and the animus. These sections were often the most boring in the game. The fun parts are the action sequences of sword fights and the parkour.
It's obvious the creators of the film were not fans of the game.

They translate well to a Netflix or HBO-type series though.

So far, the only one that's tried something like that is Machinima with Mortal Kombat and Netflix with Castlevania. There was an anime version of Devil May Cry that went 12 episodes but they quit after one season.

Here's how you do great games PROPERLY:

Diablo: HBO series in the vein of Game of Thrones

Starcraft: SyFy series in the vein of The Expanse or Battlestar Galactica

Warcraft: HBO series in the vein of Game of Thrones

Metal Gear: FX series in the vein of The Americans or SyFy series in the vein of Incorporated

Devil May Cry: Story is short enough you can make it into a film focusing on the Dante/Vergil conflict.

Mortal Kombat: Warner owns the rights, the only way you can do this properly is an HBO series like Westworld.

I think the Witcher would make an excellent movie and an even better high end TV series for HBO to make.

Witcher would be better as an "American Gods" or "Outlander" type series by Starz. I don't think Warner has the rights.

Season 1: Exposition of the tournament, the Great Kung Lao losing to Goro, summary of the 9 tournaments prior to the 1992 tournament, gathering of the participants. (Liu Kang and Kung Lao with the White Lotus, Bi Han/Hanzo Hasashi, Blade and Briggs chasing Kano, etc) 2nd half of the season is the first tournament with Liu Kang winning. Season Cliffhanger is the start of the original MK2.

Season 2: Outworld "1-shot" tournament (first half of season), Shao Kahn's attempted invasion of Earthrealm (2nd half of season). Season cliffhanger is Shinnok being freed from the Netherrealm.

Season 3: Season is a mixture of MK4 and the backstory of Shinnok and the Elder Gods. Season cliffhanger is Quan Chi's escape from the Netherrealm.

Season 4: Formation of the Deadly Alliance and the events of MK5 (Shortened season - 6/7 episodes). Cliffhanger is the emergence of Onaga

Season 5: Mixture of Shujinko's backstory, MK6, and the events of Armageddon. Season finale is Raiden sending his consciousness back to the original tournament to start the 2011 Mortal Kombat game.

Season 6: Events of Mortal Kombat (2011 version). Cliffhanger is the conversation between Quan Chi and Shinnok at the end.

Season 7: Events of Mortal Kombat X. Cliffhanger is Dark Raiden's threat to the new rulers of the Netherrealm.

Season 8: TBD

Cut the fat overall (the ridiculous characters introduced in Deadly Alliance and Deception that provide absolutely nothing to the overall story) and you have a winner.

Pretty sure StarCraft as low budget movies exist across the pond.

Nope just the Ultramarines cartoon.

Carry on.

I lost interest about a third of the way in. It was a pretty boring movie.

The Mortal Kombat live action TV series was amazing. I saw a DVD of the show's one and only season at Best Buy once and I wish I bought it.

Just continuing the long line of video game movies that suck. The only reason I had hope was Fassbender but even he couldn't do anything with this.

If a TV series, I picture someone like Kelly Overton (Vanessa from Van Helsing) playing her. She has the right hair color, build, and look.

I would have cast Tim Olyphant or Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Jim Raynor, but they're getting up there in age. (I would, however, love to see Jeffery Dean Morgan as Arcturus Mengsk) Maybe Ben McKenzie (Jim Gordon from Gotham) as Raynor?
