“I drink your milkshake” scene. How has this aged? I can’t believe DDL actually did it

It’s a ridiculous parody of a scene that, for some reason, is viewed as high art.

I really like him as a actor but I can’t see how either of them in that scene didn’t laugh so hard they pissed themselves. I know I did just watching it.

Another scene that cracked me up was when he kept yelling “bastard in a basket”

It is awful.

I caught so much flack for calling this out at the time but it was obvious to anyone not drooling all over DDL and PTA, both of whom I love btw.

So much wasted potential for that story.

Yeah, it was great, and then all of a sudden it just fell flat. To me it starts heading downhill when his fake brother shows up.

This is still a brilliant scene. One of the best acting performances I've ever watched.

ETA: That's not to say I didn't laugh, but it was supposed to be kind of funny

It is completely out of character for Plainview.

Takes a dark and intense character and turns him into a cartoon in the final act.

The very definition of scenery chewing, in the worst way possible.

It is awful.

I disagree. I think plainview was descending into dementia, and this would therefore be completely in character. It would also explain his increasing paranoia later in the movie

He is talking down to Eli like a child. Basically demeaning him. That's very much in Plainview's character.

Yep. It is definitely in character, but also a good glimpse into how much he has lost it. You are watching him release almost all of his frustrations. Great scene.

ETA: I also took some of the theatrics of the scene as him poking fun at the church scene where he was "humiliated".

He's messing with Eli in front of Eli's congregation on Eli's turf.

The whole film is a turf war on multiple levels...

Including the drainage...Plainview stole from Eli's turf

Exactly. He has fully descended into madness and alcoholism, the only thing in his life he viewed in a positive light was some semblance of family, his brother turned out to be an imposter and his "son" just told him to FO. The only thing he has left is winning against those he hates, and he has just had the ultimate victory over his most hated enemy, so yeah he's basically gleeful as he rubs Eli's face in his humiliation and defeat. It's perfectly in character with Plainview and just because that scene produced some parodies and memes doesn't mean it wasn't absolutely fantastic.

Scenes like that show why PTA is a genius and the modern day Kubrick.

But that was only after Plainview mocked him, again in cartoon fashion.

I understand he was trying to talk down to him to humiliate him. He’s also mocking his ridiculous antics during his sermons.

But it still isn’t him.

The whole movie he is the definition of speak softly and carry a big stick. He’s a dark, brooding, calculating man. Until the final act when all of a sudden he’s a cartoon.

He can humiliate this broken peasant without acting like a damn clown to do it. Drunk or not. He’s about to bash his fricking brains in with a bowling pin for crying out loud.

That’s my take anyway. Scenes hit people differently. For me, it didn’t work

I generally agree.

But compare that scene to Pyle in FMJ and I think there is a clear winner in the descent into murderous madness category.

One is believable and horrifying and fits the tone of the film. One is cartoonish and unintentionally funny and is out of left field.

That scene was also a few years later, after Plainview had basically left the fields and become a recluse in his mansion. A scene right before showed him sitting in a hallway randomly shooting things, in what I thought was an obvious transition from cold calculating looking for an edge Plainview, to a Plainview that had won the oil battle and was now filthy rich but alone with nothing else to do but drink and go off the deep end.

Yeah that's a good observation about him becoming a rich recluse. Of course any conclusion is as possible as any other. Who is to say how the character evolves other than the storyteller and the actor playing him?

I guess I would just like to see more of that evolution before the jarring final outcome.

Like I said, no point in trying to convince anyone because everyone watches and responds to film differently.

For me, the scene pulled me out of the experience that I had spent over two hours immersed in and not in a good way. Personally
