Hypothetical Breaking Bad Question: What Makes It Your Best Show If It's Not?

This is more for those who still don't have Breaking Bad as their top favorite show. This is a conversation I had with some buddies and I wanted to see others thoughts on this subject

I've seen The Wire, The Sopranos amongst other shows and obviously wait in anticipation every week for Breaking Bad and to me hands down, Breaking Bad wins it with The Wire in 2nd.

For those of you that don't have it as your top show, what would it take in these remaining 5 episodes for it to make your top show or is there really anything that it could do at this point to achieve that spot on your list?

DISCLAIMER: You have to have at least watched The Wire, The Sopranos and Breaking Bad to compete in this since those three are generally considered the best shows in the biz

There is nothing it can do. It can't beat The Wire.

It lacked a great hero narrative, any redeeming characters, or any signs of hope for any important characters. Even if it does that in the final 5 episodes, it spent too much time going downhill to be a fun roller-coaster ride. It was a spiral, which might be interesting but is morally depraved.

Characters too often, were very stagnant, save for Walter White, and the story itself was generally slow.

The Wire was far better because it played with those ideas. Heroes and Villains. Hope, Redemption, etc. Those are great stories.

Those are broad descriptors. I don't necessarily mean hope as a singular idea, but that of positive motivations and goals. The interplay of what we want, what we think we want and want we get, as far as motivating characters is as base as it gets.

I don't think it has to do anything more than its been doing. It's an excellent show. Personally, I still have The Sopranos as my number 1 and I don't think Breaking Bad will surpass it. I will readily say it's the best cable TV show I've ever seen, as long as they don't frick it up(which I don't think will happen). As I said in a recent thread, it's a 1a 1b conversation.

It's currently in second place behind The West Wing. Depending on the ending will it have a chance to go to #1.

I'm kind of with Freauxzone. There would have to be some really amazing redemption happen in the end to win me over if we are talking shear enjoyment. I'm old fashioned that way. However, if we are talking about consistently good writing, it is GOAT right now for me.

Everything considered, this might be the single worst thread I've ever seen on the movie/tv board.

Black and White certainly doesn't mean absence of grey, The Wire was about as far from Black and White as you can get.

But it had all three, that's the difference.

Breaking Bad isn't even grey, it's all black.

It is an excellent show but it seems oddly how 90 percent of the stuff people trash about the Walking Dead actually apply to Breaking Bad as well. So while Breaking Bad gets the praise I chalk that up to the "drugs are cool, zombies are for nerds" mentality.

After all, Breaking Bad mastered the nothing happens for 55 minutes then cool shite happens for 5 thing before the Walking Dead did.

They managed the uninspiring shitty background actors thing first. The distant unlikeable male lead. The female lead you love to hate. The antagonist who may be less bad than the protangonists.

After all I only started Breaking Bad about 6 months back after seeing it recommended so much and being a big TWD/Mad Men fan.

Then I realized these things were all present in Breaking Bad and Mad Men as well and I come to accept them just as stuff that will happen on AMC dramas. So why can't the hardcord BB fans accept that?

I've never been able to make it past the start of season 3 of the wire. I enjoy breaking bad significantly more.

Despite being one of the most well acted and well written shows of all time, those two things are behind both The Wire and Breaking Bad, and even Mad Men. I assume most people who have it as their favorite do so because it's fresher. But either way, I have no issue with anyone saying Breaking Bad is the GOAT, because it truly is a fantastic show all around.

Certain tropes used by BB may also be present in TWD, except BB isn't written on construction paper with crayon and acted by community theater actors.

Pretty much agree with this completely. It has sort of developed a cult like fan base (which is interesting to me because it really isn't a "culty" show). For me there is nothing it can do in the last 5 episodes to top The Wire and Mad Men, but I think it has the ability to jump The Sopranos with an incredible ending. But honestly, you can't go wrong with any of these shows. They are all incredible, and it has been a treat being able to watch them.

I finally started Breaking Bad a week ago and midway through S2 its very good but this need to put it on equal footing with The Wire baffles me. David Simon drew the definitive portrait of a modern American city, with layer upon layer of thought provoking and deeply troubling commentary on the world we live in. Breaking Bad is entertaining, but The Wire is more aptly compared to Tolstoy.
