I'm taking the leap and getting rid of cable.

What are the best alternatives? I've heard Netflix and Hulu Plus do good things.

Do I need both of them?

If you're up to date on everything, Netflix won't help you any.

I am cable-less and have Netflix. I've had it for about three years and I still have tons of stuff to watch.

I've never had Hulu Plus though. I figure once (if it ever happens) I run out of stuff on Netflix, I'll add Hulu plus.

You buying an OTA antenna? You should be able to pick up all your local channels through that.

Yea I'm gonna pick up an antenna and either do Netflix or Hulu, and rent from Redbox or Amazon.

I will be running these through my Xbox

Hulu Plus will allow to get current episodes on your TV through your XBox.

Netflix has a ton to choose from, but doesn't have current seasons available.

What's your aim?

If you looking to keep up with current TV shows episode by episode, Hulu+.

If you are looking for a wider library with more movies, past tv shows, etc., pick Netflix.

If you want both, get both.
If you want both on a budget, get Netflix streaming only and Hulu+

I don't watch a lot of current shows. I usually scan for movies and watch old reruns of Seinfeld, king of queens, and rules of engagement. The only thing ill miss is sports, but I think I'll be able to find Braves games online.

I haven't had Hulu in over a year but when I did some series were restricted through the Xbox app. Community was one I remember. Just an FYI

Then Netflix is a no brainer. For sports, there are so many ways around it. ESPN3, NBC extra live (awesome for golf), CBS Sports etc. For things like baseball you'd just have to find an online stream and if you have a smart phone, you can connect it to your TV.

If you're cutting cable you should probably get both. You'll still be saving a ton of money, so if $16 vs. $8 a month makes a difference to you then you should probably watch less TV and get a 2nd job.

The one curve ball to throw into the equation is Amazon Prime. On it's own you'd never choose Amazon Prime over NetFlix because Amazon's interface is pretty bad. However, if you already have Amazon Prime ($80 per year) for the free shipping, the amount of overlap in the movies and TV shows they offer might make you choose Amazon over NetFlix if you're pinching pennies. NetFlix's catalog is bigger, but I'd say 85% of what I've watched on NetFlix lately has been on Amazon Prime too.

FYI - Netflix is introducing a lot of original content now too. House of Cards has been very good, Arrested Development comes out in less than two months, and they just announced new Sci-Fi show in 2014 from the Wachowskis who did Cloud Atlas and Matrix.
