$600ish. Should’ve told Elaine’s dad to get bent and walked with the jacket inside out.

Every time I see that episode, I'm always wondering that. Especially since it was in the early 90's. I mean really, how much are we talking about here? Figured it had to be in excess of a grand.

It's suede, $800 even in 1991. Prices for suede were sky high back then, now they've gone way down like
Cashmere.

George: "How much did you pay for this jacket?"
George: "Tell me you didn't pay $300 for this jacket"
Jerry *silent smirk*
George: "$400? Did you pay $400 for this jacket"
George: "Five---Hund-dred. You paid $500 for this jacket didn't you"
Jerry: *silence*
George: "Wait a second, are you trying to tell me you spent $700 for this jacket?!"
George: "Your a sick sick man"

Jerry doesn't respond. So he spent over $700.

In Can't Buy Me Love (1987), Cindy Mancini pays $1000 to replace her Mom's suede skirt and jacket.

So, $800 for Jerry's jacket in 1991 is not unreasonable.

I always wondered how much the amount on Jerry’s paystub that made Elaine turn into a gold digger was for

I think most people speculate 50k plus. The caddy he would have bought his dad would be around 25k I think

It's actually insane to think how much many items used to cost 30-40 yrs ago, before everything was made in China.

Big Screen TVs that took up half your living room were $3000.

Suede and leather jackets - easily $400+

VHS tapes were $30-$60.

Nintendo and SNES systems basically the same price as today.

It's crazy to think about how anyone even afforded any of that stuff when the average gross salary was probably $18K a year, if that.

It would have sold for a few hundred more, if the lining wasn’t pink.

Alton Benes was a famous author, a combat veteran and a badass in general. Jerry was a comedian. If you notice in other episodes he nearly always backs down from a confrontation. George actually has more backbone than Jerry.

Bought a Wilson leather jacket in 1995 (Donnie Brasco-esque) for just around that price.

Now they're half that at least.

But mine's still going strong despite being worn regularly in snow and cold in the past...just ages like an old comfortable baseball Mitt. Heavy, quality...which has gone down obviously, with cheaper Chinese production. You get what you pay for and nobody makes anything to last anymore.

I watched this episode and a coupon of others from this timeframe last night. Unrelated question, did the student at Columbia actually steal Jerry’s statue? If so, is there ever any indication why? Maybe I missed it (again).

There are no big coincidences or small coincidences, just coincidences.
