Few did as much with as little as he did (maybe Corman?).
I feel as salty as he does about big Hollywood ripping him off after Halloween (Friday 13th, etc.).
Now, he did not have tremendous range (mostly scifi, horror), but what he did was usually significant and influenced the films that came after.

Carpenter is top 20 for sure like someone else said.
I even really enjoy Escape from L.A., so campy, cynical, funny, scary.

Workmanlike auteur, gruff machismo exterior like his western-helming forebears (hawkes, peckinpah, ford).
But a true visionary who spanned genres.

Is there another movie like Halloween that so clearly created an entire genre? Influence-wise he's got to be top 10.

Top 20 for sure as far as movies go but top 5 as far as talent. He did it all, writing, directing, editing, & his own musical scores. He completely composed the Halloween score himself, along with Escape from NY, The Fog, Precinct 13 & others. He's a genius.

I think he's a bit overrated. Carpenter is better with concepts than the act of direction and editing. Really good musical mind.
I think some of his works, even good ones like ITMOM, could have been better if he produced it and had someone else doing more of the nitty gritty in terms of shooting/directing and editing. He had Sam Neil hamming it up in terms of delivery, like it was a noir screwball from the 40s.
The Thing is obviously elite. He just never really came close to that in another movie, but I still love ITMOM, Prince of Darkness, etc.
The loose style does blend well with Big Trouble.

This depends on definitions and how intricate you make the genre.
Many consider TCM to be a slasher, which would mean it predates Halloween. Just to give a relevant example for your post.
Is Cannibal Holocaust found footage or do we give the start to Blair Witch?

Corman did some great Poe adaptations in the 60s, but he's mostly remembered for the cheap shlock he did in the 70s and 80s. His best stuff is overlooked by all the garbage he did later in his career.
Maybe Carpenter learned that lesson and retired early before he tarnished his reputation.
