This is all leading to them fighting each other on the back of dragons. Why the hell did they let him take the dragon just because he "claimed it" in the middle of the night?
Even if he didnt lose the eye would they of given up the biggest dragon that easy?

Supposedly they actually considered starting the story later in the timeline but thought they needed this set up.
Glad they took this route so far. Packed with action and quick time lines setting up the story line where they can get back to a typical speed for the meat.

I think it's sorta like a wand picking a wizard - not the other way around. Once they had that connection, there isn't much that can be done.

I mean they sort of established this earlier.
A dragon isn't like a horse. There is a mutual understanding and bond that must be developed and it's not always a clear line of succession.
Someone else can speak to the specifics, but Daemon is riding like his uncle's former dragon for example.
Aemond established the bond and at this point thats pretty much it. trying to take it back would likely just end up in a lot of charred corpses and rejecting the daughter anyways

She also, in this episode, wanted her "protector" on the Kingsguard to completely disregard his oath and maime another Prince. The head of the Kingsguard had to step in on that one (if you didn't notice his look at Sir Criston). Or we just ignoring that too?
I took it more like the Lord Commander was looking at Cole asking " Well, what are you going to do in this little predicament". I didn't think he was telling him no with the look. They've made Cole out to be a huge piece of shite, but I think he decided not to maim one of the Velaryon kids on his own. "As your sworn protector, your Grace".

Looks like multiple people answered before I read the rest of the thread.
I'll use this post to say that it looks like Aemond One-Eye will be played by Osfterth from Last Kingdom. I liked him in that show.

I’m team eye patch kid. I didn’t see any of those other kids try to mount the biggest dragon of them all. Kids got balls and he is going to look bad arse riding a dragon with an eye patch.

nice. Looking forward to an expanded role for that actor.

Kid's also got a lot of Joffrey/Ramsay energy.
has the potential to be a pretty ruthless and callous player.

The other kids all already had dragons, except for Rhaena, who was planning to claim Vhagar once the family was done dealing with her mother's funeral.

It's years of hatred & contempt coming to a head.
Agreed as the tension in the beginning of the episode added so much more to the rest of the episode.
They are not even consoling each other. And Dameon has that little laugh during the ceremony. Like lets just get this over with. No one wants to be here and everyone hates everyone here.

They did a fantastic job making the funeral as awkward as possible. it was like everyone got invited to a wedding where nobody knew a single person there.

You can always kill the kid and now a new rider could have the dragon. Just saying

Daemon would have killed Cole in a second if he actually tried to move forward with it. I would have enjoyed that to be honest.

Except for the fact he is on Team Green I do like him and how he played it in the episode.

We've already witnessed Cole besting Daemon in a fight.

I don't know about all that. They are pretty evenly matched.

Yeah Cole seems positioned as probably the best one on one melee fighter around right now.
Daemon would just smoke you with his dragon or sneak up on your horse.

Thats a pretty big one considering it's the literal difference between two generations of peace between the most powerful houses and further escalation towards protracted Civil War.
But would it? The entire Realm knows R's kids are bastards. The marriage would have been a farce. What was to stop the other kids from challenging the bastard's legitimacy and going to war anyway?
