she probably had no reason to suspect they were meeting secretly. She's not a Littlefinger with his "little birds" or anything like that.
Funny how she didn't question Alicent being present at the small council meeting that day? Alicent was never present before. Why didn't Rhaenyra ask Alicent why she was there?

The two kids, Laena and Laenor, either have dragons now or get them later. At some point, they each have one though.
Just wait till they find out who all does.

Perhaps she wasn’t in a position to if she didn’t show up until the meeting started?
Maybe she did and Alicent said she didn’t know off screen?
This seems a bit nitpicky.

The last time she opened her mouth at a small council meeting they basically escorted her out...

another small (maybe) nitpick...viserys says that aegon's secret dream has been passed from king to heir ever since...and the secret never got out? its never been discussed elsewhere? what if a king dies before he tells his heir

If she had known they were hanging out, don't you think she would have had an inkling in her mind when the King brought up marriage that her dad might want to marry Alicent - that being Alicent's whole motivation for hanging out and all?
This is my point. It seems silly for her to be mad at her dad. Surprise or not, it seems like she’s better positioned if her best friend weds her dad rather than a 12 year old girl from a family that believes they should be sitting in the iron throne.

It is, but small council is called small council for a reason. People aren't invited in. Ever wonder why the cup bearers are children of the king and not some servant?

Alicent will no longer be her best friend and confidant. Her Dad will now be piping her best friend. That would destroy any young teen girl even in a fantasy land that has dragons. In case you haven't noticed it's not like Rhaenyra has a lot of interaction with girls her age or even other friends. She's now isolated.

Eh. I think there's something to also be said how the patriarchs in those families have also treated her at Council. Otto was basically like "shoo little girl" and has been condescending as frick towards her.
Corlys sided with her at Council when she suggested sending the dragonriders to deal with Daemon's shite.
While they're both maneuvering for power, I think it's reasonable for her to think that the guy who married the Queen That Never Was (and supported her claim) would be alright with her being Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

Again, we're assuming she had time to address it. If they all arrived at the same time, she likely didn't have even a moment to ask and she's not going to openly ask in the middle of a council meeting.

Why not? Does she seem like a meek child who always obeys her father?

Because she literally just got her arse chewed for doing just that (speaking out in a council meeting and disobeying her father).
She also just had the conversation with her father where he had expressed that no one would ever replace her mother but he would be remarrying. You could tell by that conversation that she thought the was talking about marrying Corlys daughter as had been openly planned.
For all she knew he was announcing that bethrothal.
Like I said, seems nitpicky at best.

This is all the more reason why Rhaenyra should have immediately thought it odd that Alicent was present. They don't even make the half hearted attempt to show Rhaenyra making quizzical eyes and looking around.

I don't think that this is very nit picky considering the amount of detail in these books.
*I don't think she is scared about stepping on her Dad's toes. Her Uncle tells her that her Dad is weak and her Dad only proves such with the disastrous attempt to confront her Uncle at Dragonstone. She ultimately has to swoop in on her dragon and save everyone.

Seeing as you're the only one that thinks that, you might ask yourself that question.

Not telling his wife, her reaction to what was happening, not being there for his daughter, not telling anyone about Alicent, not going after the pirates, letting Daemon do whatever he wants. All of these things are part of the bigger picture about the King. He is weak, and doesn’t consider how his decisions make him look to others.
He is weak, everyone knows that. However being by his wifes side, crying, holding her hand and comforting her while she was dying is not one of the reasons why.

It's called shock value. It wasn't a perfect scene but it created more drama doing it that way. There's not a whole lot to read into there

Fair enough. I'd rather they didn't have Alicent in the room and just have Rhaenyra leave and confront Alicent in the garden or somewhere else. I'm done beating the dead horse.

Honestly at the time this didnt set off any side eye, but upon having it pointed out, yeah, this was a pretty silly move on the directors part to do the scene this way.
Not only is it a bit implausible she'd be present, the idea no one was questioning anything as out of place with Alicent suddenly present with her head down looking uneasy at the table next to her father, and then everyone acting shocked upon announcement(Corlys in particular), is a bit odd and stretched past suspension of disbelief.
Really, she just shouldn't have been present and they could have cut to her alone in her room gnawing her fingers or something, then cut back and had Rhaenyra and Corlys storm out. Same dramatic effect, but fits within the rules and structure of the world.

Surprised nobody is mentioning the crab king. I'm glad they are throwing in another side villain instead of everything just being family drama. That can be a nice bonus you didn't get in the book if done right.
