Saw it today.

This is not a movie. It's TV show/mini-series with TV show pacing. Nothing happens in the entire 3 hours. The entire time I was thinking 'man, this scene doesn't even need to be here.'

The Costner storyline is the only one that piques any interest and that should have been the entire film, just fleshed out.

I couldn't give a shite less about the Brits, the wagon train, the Sam Worthington/Sienna Miller plot line, or even the Indian hunting party.

This is also why Costner when left alone to his own vices and control, is just not that great of a director. He cant self edit. He thinks he's making a John Ford film, which he kind of is, but it's just too damn disjointed and slow.

And I say all of this, and I still don't know how this film is bombing so badly.

My theater had every Baby Boomer in the county in it. It was 2/3 full. Lots of bathroom breaks though. And Holy shite at the open babbling to the screen and inability to follow a narrative. It was like watching the film in a retirement home.

As for a consice review, Kermode sums it up perfectly.

My mom is obsessed with Kevin Costner and my dad loves any western and they both said it was meh. That told me everything I needed to know

Everything I’ve heard is that it’s basically Costner doing his own version of 1883 but in movie form.

I like westerns but this sounds like it will be a pass from me.

Looks like it’s a pass for a lot of people

I just wish he wouldn’t have been so hardheaded on quitting Yellowstone to film this ASAP

John Dutton needed a proper exit

He might get one if Costner loses his arse on these two films.

Not a bad point. If I’m Sheridan might be worth another call to double check

Sadly this is the vibe I got from the trailer. And I’m all in on most western films.

The film is all over the place. It's basically the first night of an old network TV miniseries, but with a much grander scale and budget.

Again, if the Costner portion of the story were fleshed out as the entire film, it would have been good.

His story is basically McCabe and Mrs Miller mixed with Pale Rider. It would have been 2 hrs and a lot of fun.

How you feeling on that "this movie will do really well, easily 100 million" prediction? Seemed like you meant 100 million opening weekend too , looks like it's currently at 22 million total worldwide.

I don't think he cares, he's no doubt loaded, but he through away probably 20+ million of his own money making this movie.

Decided to check out the early showing today because of some unexpected rain. My dad and I were the youngest by far.

It was a good movie, but it’s no Dances with Wolves. I can’t help but feel it would have been better as a limited series. 2.5 hours in and we are still meeting new characters. Even at 3 hours, I felt scenes were missing. That said, it was a beautiful movie to watch and the score was excellent in the tense scenes.

Absolutely hated the way it ends. No spoilers, but it’s basically a “coming this season” montage of what I assume are parts 2-4. Several minutes of out of context scenes showing you what’s going to happen. I skip those for tv shows on purpose, but Kevin tricked me.

I thought the movie was good, but could have been better. My thoughts pretty much mimic what you are saying.

Costner is punishing us because nobody went to see Chapter 1

Might make more money getting a streamer to buy it over putting it in theaters, spending on promotion, then having it flop bigger than the first part.

Just finished Lonesome Dove, was as awesome as I remembered it when I was a teenager

But I never even knew that they made return to lonesome dove, starting that now, no Tommy lee or Duvall but hope it’s good

Saw it this weekend. It is good. It is long. It is not a complete story and is intended to be a “First part” by design. There are a lot of storylines that seem to partially connect in the first episode, but not all.

Overall, well directed and the acting is great. Fair depiction of all groups of people in the film. If you like Westerns it is worth seeing.

I saw it last night, there were 7 viewers in a 54 seat theater, I like it like that. Viewers that can't focus for 3 hours should stream it, the multiple ongoing story lines are easy to keep up with and unlike someone upthread saying it was really disjointed with no meshing of the plot lines that is categorically wrong.

Costner is lucky that Netflix is partnering with him and I hope they finish all 4 segments but I don't want filler episodes/seasons like Yellowstone became and season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown has become unwatchable much like Sons of Anarchy became, I guess this is a Taylor Sheridan writing trait.

Horizon felt like it went by in 90 minutes, not 3 hours and this is from the guy who fell asleep all 3 times he tried to watch Children of the Flower Moon and a movie has to be close to a steaming turd to put me to sleep. I think there are a lot of adults who have very short attention spans and lack focus, Horizon isn't a movie for them. YMMV.

Yep.

They should stick to the 90 minute movie section on the Netflix while they doomscroll Facebook the entire time and don’t pay attention

Not sure what people expected.. it’s a 3 hour part 1 of 4 western about expansion and different groups trying to make it
