I wouldn't necessarily call that a flop considering the fact that the film never got a wide release. At its peak, it was only in 301 movie theaters here in the United States.

It’s got pretty good reviews and a fan following. Mainly because of Cruise & Blunt. But title changes along with tricky time jumpy plot may have turned off a good bit of the audience.
It’s all true too.

I just remember seeing absolutely NO promotion for it. Was bored on a work trip so walked across the street to the theater to see it.

Dont remember the exact numbers but Waterworld was supposed to be some kind of huge bust but when I eventually got around to watching it a few years later I thought it was pretty good.

We were in Berlin when the Assasination of Jesse James was released, and we watched it in a Berlin theater.
I thought it was an unusual but excellent film. I think the title threw some people off in the beginning. Maybe when word of mouth let people know it was deliberately paced, it may have affected box office.

Fight Club definitely jumps to mind immediately

The other is what is considered perhaps the greatest holiday film of all time:
Its a Wonderful Life
Was a total flop, so much so the studio never re-applied the copyright and it became a hit because TV stations could play it repeatedly for nothing

The Wizard of Oz was a box office disappointment. It gained its status through television

Waterworld is awesome. And it actually made $264 million against a ~$175 million budget, plus I think it also made a ton in video rentals too.
And even though Starship Troopers barely made a profit (in terms of BO vs. budget costs), I'll champion that one. It should've made billions because that movie is fricking awesome.
In terms of straight up quality vs. BO, Shawshank is probably the winner here though.

Yea TAOJJBTCRF is a fantastic western. One of the best westerns of the past 40 years or so honestly.
I legit think one of the reasons it didn't do well is because of how lame the movie title is. Just name the movie The Assassination of Jessie James. I read something when the movie came out that Brad Pitt told the director that he would play in it if they named it what they did. I was thinking, well that was dumb, because the title was so ridiculous it probably made people skip out on seeing it.
Just love the tone of this movie so much. Very haunting, great acting, and great story telling.
