HBO Max to Be Relaunched as Max, Will Combine Discovery+ and HBO Content

quote:

Per a report from The New York Times, three people with knowledge of the matter said that Max will make its debut sometime in May or June, and that it will cost $16 a month but will have several price tiers, including the inexpensive ad tier. HBO Max costs $16 a month as of January.

The information comes a day ahead of Warner Bros. Discovery executives unveiling plans for the combined streaming service, which include bringing Discovery reality shows like Fixer Upper, Dr. Pimple Popper, and Property Brothers in the same room as HBO Max series and movies like Succession, House of the Dragon, The Menu, and The Last of Us.

Agreed

HBO is my most streamed service in my house, but I’m not sure I am willing to pay for it.

Best I can tell from reading the press release, it shouldn't change anything.

I would hope, if you have both HBO and the Discovery channels on your cable package you will get it free with your provider log in. We have HBO but rarely watch the actual cable channels, just the app. I think most people do the same.
I don't understand taking "HBO" out of the name though. The HBO name has carried a lot of positive recognition for along time.

Taking HBO out of the name is doing away w/the HBO name. It’s idiotic b/c HBO holds a lot of equity w/potential customers and the name Max has less than zero.

This would be like Disney merging Disney+ and Hulu and deciding to call it Plus.

I agree with you, but I think what they are going for is HBO is a premium, aka exclusionary, brand. They want something everyone will buy. I think it's stupid in an age of easy to start and stop subscriptions where individual shows drive what people watch much more than "network theme", but I can see why they fear the HBO brand is too premium for everyone.

Pretty good comparison I think.

This is dumb and I really don’t give a crap about the shitty Discovery content at all.

I only care if it's pre-2002ish Discovery content. It began to suck arse when it went reality-focused.

It's worth the money still imo. Best streaming service out there. But like you just hate to pay for it when I've been getting it for free

Dumb. Max sounds like the app for Cinemax, which has a reputation as a third tier product.

You just better believe that: (1) it will now require you to pay an extra fee for this; (2) you're current subscription will not decrease when they take HBO Max away; and (3) you'll get nothing to replace it. Comcast/Xfinity is always out to screw you.

I have HBO Max through my AT&T internet for free, I just received an email stating it will continue with the new branding. Fingers crossed it stays this way.
