It's never stated. Rowling has described characters as having brown or dark skin, the way Cho Chang is described (and with her name) it's accepted that she's of Asian descent, I think Kingsley is flat out described as black, so with no specific description of Hermione a lot of people accept that as her being white, which she might have been when written. But it absolutely changes nothing if her race is something else.

I don't remember that line, but I'm fairly certain that adjective would be used in that instance to describe fear or being nervous, not that she's white

Sure Jan.

Especially fricking black people lol

This could be taken as a scared/pale face instead of white skin if you would so choose.

Why, in the 3rd book, would Rowling take the time to remind us that Hermione is white? This absolutely is describing her being in a state of fear.

Other than him being black (which, whatever), is there anything specifically about the actor that people don't like? I'm not familiar with him.

Im not familiar with him either, but unlike Hermione, Snape's appearance is described in detail in the books.

No

To make a more accurate and in-depth telling of this series. There are many many things that got short ended, changed or just flat out discarded due to being constrained to a movie. Half Blood Prince being the worst offender, its fricking awful

I know people have expressed concern that it just makes James and Sirrius seem racist, but there are a lot of reasons a white person and a black person can not like each other. Also, we have the books and the movies that are essentially 1-to-1. My only interest in this series is if they went a different route with some of the story lines. Otherwise, what's the point?

Hopefully they aren't modernizing the muggle world and sticking with the 90's era the story is set in, in the books.

Voldemort went to hogwarts in the 30s/40s. Death Eaters are made up of a lot of upper crust magical Britains. Snape and the Marauders went in the 70s. A lot of the death eaters were wealthy and hated muggle borns and muggles in general to the point of killing them, but yet they apparently weren't racist in a time that was very much racist for the elites. Apparently they were only bigoted when it came to your magical blood for some reason. We got to remember Snape made it very much into Voldy's inner circle, a not upper crust kid that got into that elite group.

The whole story plays into the awfulness of bigotry, but we are totally just gonna drop that actual bigotry of the time in racism.

It's just making the story jump through unnecessary changes that could very much impact delivering a book accurate story for me.

Not saying the movies are great. In fact, after Goblet of Fire (the last one I saw PRIOR to reading the book), they've been pretty crap.

I'm just fine if they don't try to recreate Rickman's performance. And as much as I like him, his portrayal of Snape is pretty tame compared to the books. Rickman played him like he was bored with it all. Snape in the books is a lot more vile and nasty. Black or white, I would like to see that version of Snape.

Oh, I agree, and I should clarify. I hate the casting because he does not look like Snape is described, but I am still excited for the series and am open to having my mind changed.

Why would she use white instead of ashen or pale? I don't know, we aren't going to get an answer from her that tells us the reason she wrote it that way when she did write it. She just makes up whatever shite she wants to retcon at this point.

This casting as I said earlier in this thread is great for me. This actress looks to be a great fit and I don't think this impacts the story like Snape's casting.

They worked around it before just fine. Kingsley is a pure blood, Dean Thomas and Lee Jordan are half bloods, maybe Angelina Johnson is a half blood but it's unclear from the google search I just did

But Snape was a half blood but hid that fact from his death eater friends. I don't see this being a road block.

Oxford says

quote:

pale from fear, ill health, or tiredness.
"she emerged white-faced and shaking"

"white faced" is a pretty common turn of phrase

Uh, since when are any of these characters in leadership positions of a group of magical upper class murderers of lower class people?

Like I said, I know nothing about him. I went to his IMDB and I'm drawing a blank.

We'll see.

Kingsley is an Auror and eventually becomes the Minister of Magic.

For white skinned individuals yes, for darker skin ashen is usually the preferable term as they tend to become more gray faced from blood loss.

Since when is Kingsley in the Death Eaters? I mean at least learn the damn story before you chatgpt it. Kingsley is a good guy and not in the bigoted group.

When they cast little kids for what should be a long running show like this, I wonder how much they look at the kids' parents (or even genetic testing?). I mean, if Harry or Ron stop growing at 5' 3" and Hermoine sprouts up to 5' 8" things could start to look weird.

I do think about this, whether they factor in the look of the parents at various ages.

If Adam Driver (I think he's playing Professor Snape) looks like the guy form Gold Rush:
