Has anyone ever disappeared into a role as well as Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade?

There's Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade:

Then there's Billy Bob Thornton in every other TV (Fargo) or Movie (Tombstone, Armageddon) ever:

How did he disappear so successfully in Sling Blade? I'm looking at him...I know it's him...and yet it isn't. It's Karl. I don't see prosthetics. And I know there's no CGI magic.

Who else has so successfully disappeared, visually, into another character as to be unrecognizable?

Incredible actor.

What role are you thinking? He's still very recognizable to me in Tinker Tailor, Batman, etc.

I don't know why (Batman?) but I just thought of Collin Farrel in The Batman...but that was done with more movie magic/prosthetics. Impressive, but not (to me) in the same ballpark with Thornton in Sling Blade.

And to answer your question obviously I’m picking Fifth Element as my favorite not only for his visual transformation but his redneck accent was wild and very well done.

Still Recognizable as Oldman...except in your example, third row all the way to the right. Really disappears into his Biden role.

Daniel Day Lewis. In everything. Or maybe its just me. I do not think I would recognize him if he appeared at my door.

First thought was Heath Ledger as the Joker but this is also a good one.

Yeah. Great point. Daniel Plainview. Lincoln. I didn't love he movie...but he WAS Lincoln. Same with There Will Be Blood...which is a MT. Rushmore movie for me.

He still is recognizable as "DDL" though, visually. Whatever Billy Bob did was special. Maybe it was added weight, maybe the hair, maybe the jutted chin...the baggy clothes.

I can just stare at him on the screen and still don't see the actor that I see in all of Billy Bob's other roles.

His expression, or lack thereof, may have contributed a lot to that. The hair, roundness of face…all factors for sure.

I try to “see” Heath Ledger in the Joker in the way you describe, and have a tough time. But at least there, the makeup is major.

Side note: Dwight Yoakam should have had a supporting actor nod for his portrait of Doyle Hargraves. Incredible.

That is the fricking winner right there. Movie was meh but her transformation and acting was top notch.

Honorable Mention to Tom Cruise in "Born on the Fourth of July".

It's his only movie (other than Tropic Thunder) where you are not constantly aware it's Tom Cruise. He really became Ron Kovic.

DiCaprio was impressive in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
