Pretty much every film Kubrick ever made.

Someone listened to Le Batard this morning

Who ever thought we would have a thread where the comparisons for John McTiernan were:
Nolan
Speilberg
Mann
Kubrick
Hitchcock.

Coppola did The Conversatkon, Godfather 2, and Apocalypse Now in about that same amount of time.
Godfather 2 won Best Picture and Best Director, Conversation was in direct competition to Godfather 2 at that year’s Academy Awards, and Apocalypse is arguably the best war film of all time.

Depends... can we do a thread on hiring PIs in Hollywood? That might get similar results.

Just re-watched 13th Warrior thanks to this thread.

Depends, do you consider Hook to be a classic?
No.

His 3rd movie will be later this year, First Man, but Chazelle came out of the gate with Whiplash and La La Land. Pretty ridiculous start

Can you imagine the reaction on social media today if a major studio cast a Spaniard to play an Arab lead?

Of all the problems with 13th Warrior, I don’t think casting was near the top of the list.

Don't get all the hate for 13th Warrior.
It was a very entertaining movie on its own, and a pretty faithful adaptation of Michael Crichton's "Eaters of the Dead".

I find it falls into the category of “Did this really need to be adapted?” And I’m a Crichton fan.
Still rather watch it than Congo or Sphere.

13th Warrior is my go-to movie anytime anyone starts a "what movie that is not well liked to you really like" type threads. For some reason I just really enjoy that movie.

I watched Heat for the very first time a few weekends ago... was very underwhelmed. Pacino overacted the shite out of that movie. Deniro was good.

I love McTiernan and I love 90s Michhael Mann, but Stan is the only answer here. His whole fricking career post 1960 was Exactly what the OP is asking for.
Dude never did one genre twice... Hell half his movies don't even have. A genre... Like, what the he is Eyes Wide Shut... What is A Clockwork Orange... What is Strangelove etc etc.
Barry Lyndon, 1975, was not what people expected from him after Clockwork Orange, but it stands the twts of time. Then 5 yrs later you have probably the greatest horror achievement ever in The Shining.
Really only did Full Metal Jacket (as a whole film) not top its competition.
The guy was a walking enigma of genius.
