I really liked HIMYM. My main issue with it was how RUSHED the end was with the mother. And sure, I realize the show was called how I MET your mother, so they didn't owe us some fleshed out character of the mom. But it sure seems like it would've felt more complete had they done that.

But Ted and Robin ending up together after the absurdity of not only Barney getting with her being BFF with Ted...but then the turnaround of Ted doing it after she and Barney were married...just felt cheap and lazy. It was like they tried to throw a curveball to the audience when they should've just piped a fastball down the plate. Who cares if Ted/Robin was obvious. That's what the audience preferred anyway. And it would've felt much more organic.

However, I didn't catch onto the show until about S5 or so, and then I caught up and watched live from there. And I thought it was really good even through the last season and the finale. Sure, I thought pairing Robin with Barney was a cheap bait and switch and felt stupid. But I also wasn't as attached to the show/characters as people who had been around since the beginning, so I really enjoyed it a lot.

Of course I agree with everyone on Ted/Mother and Barney/Robyn, but I don't think it was that bad after season 4. Sure, it struggled at times, but there were some good moments in those seasons. However, I felt cheated by the ending, like everyone else. I watched, what, 8 seasons, and there was no payoff. Sure the mother was a good character and they did a good job of hinting in earlier seasons about how he "met" her. But it was all washed away by that horrible ending. I will not rewatch it.

I loved the scene at the train station when they're talking about the umbrella. She seemed like such a perfect match for ted.

The problem of the ending was that they had always shown the kids from the very start and they looked identical to Robin and Ted. So instead of going with the obvious, they tried to subvert expectations by slipping in the “real“ mother , who had similar features to Robin.

The problem is they had this ending planned all along for him to eventually go after Robin again for the show ending. The show outlived this ending by having her marry Barney and they needed to change it. It completely destroyed the growth of Barney and Ted having that stupid episode where Robin floats away like a balloon that I have failed trying to erase from my memory how cringy that was to watch. Writers just wanted their ending too much and didn’t care that the ending was now garbage because of the choices they made through the years.

What a great sitcom!

My favorite sitcom of all time. It absolutely is not without the typical flaws that come with every long running sitcom but I love it anyway, even the last seasons. The finale...is not good. I choose to believe that the "alternate ending" that basically cuts out the last part of the finale is the canon one.

The episode where Marshall’s dad dies is fantastic. It’s fricking brutal, but really well done.

They had the start of Robin Sparkles and Slap Bet in the same episode. Genius.

They should have NEVER done the Barney/Robin thing, ever.

Agreed. Barney never ever should have gotten a serious girlfriend and definitely not Robin. They also made a mistake by making Robin a megaslut(who hilariously gets called out by Marshall one episode). Why would Ted still be infatuated with a woman who has slept with half of NYC?

Barney and Marshall were always the highlights of the show. Dunking on Ted's snobbery and simp behavior was also funny. Robin's only real highlights was Robin Sparkles and her dynamic with Patrice. Lilly...was needed for the plot I guess(I do like the actress though)

I hated what they did to Victoria’s character in the latter seasons.

FF to today, where writers actively mock their own work and fans and go out of their way to do even cringier things that make even less sense.

And these are the geniuses who went on strike to demand MORE pay.

Yeah she was goated so they had to destroy her. She was right though, remaining friends with Robin was unacceptable.

True story. Sometime around 2008, I was at a wedding and met a writer from the show. A little hipster that probably thought he was too good to be at a wedding in Birmingham, Alabama.

Had a few too much and told him it would ruin the show if they got Barney & Robin together. He acted all pompous and said it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.
