Universal and Imagine Entertainment are developing a sequel to 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with three key players expected to return.

Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise his role as the classic Dr. Seuss character the Grinch, with Ron Howard returning to direct. Howard will produce alongside his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer.

The untitled sequel will have a script by Alec Berg (Barry, Silicon Valley, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jeff Schaffer (Life, Larry and The Pursuit of Unhappiness, Dave, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and David Mandel (Veep, Curb Your Enthusiasm).

Nope. The animated one with Benedict Cumberbatch was better in every respect, and even that wasn't needed.

I'm surprised Carrey is into this when he's talked extensively about how awful that makeup situation was. He took "torture training" to get through it.

I agree. It's the most watched Christmas movie for my 3 kids under the age of 10. I still like to watch it once a year.

Admittedly, I did not watch the Carey version when I was a kid. So, I didn't have that nostalgic factor when I watched it in 2025 for the first time.

I saw the Carrey version as an adult, when it came out. It was OK(ish). The animated one is far cheerier and overall has a more pleasant tone.

It's a better movie. People confuse nostalgia with quality.

Was certain Jim Carrey said he was retiring from acting after Sonic 2.

Odds he’s pulled an Andy Kauffman & it’ll be his doppelgänger doing the acting from now on?

I genuinely don’t believe this. Carrey is basically retired at this point and the original is close to 30 years old now.

Only way Carrey is coming back is if they offer him a blank check that he can’t refuse.

The Carrey version felt like a fever dream. Definitely liked it way more than any of the other versions.

EH.....it was good, don't get me wrong. I was very pleasingly surprised. But no, nothing tops Jim Carrey Grinch.

You’re downvoted to hell but I agree. We watch the Cumberbatch one 2-3x a year between Thanksgiving and Christmas with my kids.

I watch Carrey Grinch maybe 5 times in my 36 years and I’ve been forced half of those.

I hate that movie, will never watch this sequel
