This was what I was coming here to say. It was such a great movie and then it felt like it ended weird.

Yes! Really cool movie for two acts. They should just ended the movie after two acts with a placard saying "...then they flew into the sun."

Ok, it wasn't a great movie - it was barely a good movie - but the ending of Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes is easily the worst ending ever - he even admitted it didn't make sense on purpose because it would be a way of getting buzz to get more people to go (wtf?)

Since he choose to “reimagine” the story, he obviously had a high bar with one of the most iconic “shock” endings in movie history for the original.

The Statue of Liberty obviously provided an answer to a question which was brought up in the movie. The Lincoln Memorial ending literally came out of nowhere.

I’ve got to say that Donnie’s death has always bothered me, and seemed so unnecessary.

Even though the topic is “great movie” with a bad ending, Im still giving you an upvote because “the Last Jedi” ruined the endings of Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

I like this take.

Not sure I really agree though because Miller is just temporarily a captain. He is first and foremost a teacher. He took his last moment to teach a lesson. The lesson being those who go home all do so on the shoulders of brave men. Don’t ever waste the gift of life.

This is a citizen soldiery and Miller the teacher gives his last lecture to Ryan.

This!

Bad enough he didnt get away with his plan but the way they did it where Fox finally got a jump on him was absolutely weak.
A mystery guy not even shown in the fkn movie comes through with the big secret lead that led to Butler's plan being foiled. FOH

I always thought he was breaking the fourth wall and telling the audience to earn or be worthy of the freedom that so many men died to give them

Whoever the hell that thinks it’s good that Donnie died is clearly out of their element.

“The Ring”

Exceptional movie that still haunts me. Terrible ending for a viewer who prefers the good guys overcoming the odds in the end. There is enough nihilism irl, I don’t need it from movies.

Also, as a second-runner up, “The Others”. So nicely done, yet so anticlimactic. Just why?

You're right..I had a knee-jerk reaction to the word "terrible" in the OP and didn't honor the title thread properly.

Here's another offering of a great movie with a terrible ending:

The Wizard of OZ: It was a fricking Dream!

Here's an "Average" movie I really like for some reason that I feel there screwed up the ending:

Passengers: They should have had a way where both could go back into cryo-sleep and build a new life on the new world.
