I'm done with the so-called fan fic until WoW is released. I just figured I would take Tyrion's advice.
Nah. Don't quit that. It was just some good natured ribbing. Your predictions and scenarios add to the flow of these episode threads and have made for or added to some interesting conversations.

I guess a giant could probably take one down with a bow and arrow but if that was the case then I guess the one question I pose is, again, why the frick did Wun Wun not have some kinda weapon during the BotB?!?!
Because he was old school and liked killing with his bare hands? But other giants have had weapons, including bows.
Whether or not any of the Giant Wights have them is yet to be seen. I disagree with the notion that the WWs have to have a dragon on their side to even the odds though. Their weapon is the ever growing zombie horde which grows with each life they take on the battle field. They don't need a weapon of mass destruction to tip the scales, in fact having a WMD might tip the scales too much in their favor.

I wonder if Drogon is a direct descendant of Balerion the Black Dread? I can't remember where Illyria said he got those eggs.
I rewatched the first couple of episodes this past weekend. I'm pretty sure he said he got the eggs from the Shadowlands

The more i think about what is likely going to happen in this episode the more i get pissed off about how shitty of a commander jon is.
What has he done "good" in his command history? Battle against the free folk - saved by stannis. Then he goes and pisses off enough of his command to get himself murdered.
Battle of the Bastards - saved by Knights of the Vale which he didn't even ask for their help. Essentially went in with a plan to get everyone pledged to him slaughtered - also him sprinting forward taking them completely out of position essentially doomed them even further from the outset if they hadn't been saved.
And now he leads this company north of the wall to capture an ice zombie. Doesn't he know they are traveling in like a massive group? He didn't want to get anyone to do some scouting, maybe before he left for he could have sent a raven back to Bran saying "can you please raven eyes and let me know where they are / how many or send someone to eastwach". I know he is teleporting in the show but time does pass and winterfell is much closer than dragonstone.
The overall stupidity of the main character is starting to frustrate me.

I've always concluded that the same magic that keeps the army of the dead north of the wall bars his passage as well.

Just an FYI, the Three Eyed Raven thread is no longer safe. This may have already been known, but since it was previously just for that leaked episode, I just thought I would post here.

Yeah. I learned that the hard way already. I'm not dead set on being unspoiled about stuff. I don't seek it out but I'm not going to be screaming bloody murder if I found out what happens. I watched ep 4 early and I saw parts of the 5th script. Some of 6 has been spoiled for me thanks to that thread. But whatever.

1) He doesn't know Bran has visions. As far as he knows Bran saw the army of the dead on his way back to Winterfell.
2) Time is of the essence. They want to get a ceasefire in place so they can prepare to battle the WWs.
3) This is clearly a bad plan. Enough good alternatives have been brought up in this thread that if this were IRL, you'd hope this wouldn't be what they went with. But a suicide mission from a rag tag group of misfits forged into an elite strike force makes for good TV.

1) Good point, i didn't think of that.
2) He still had to travel to eastwatch. Regardless of the show timing, it will take a few weeks at a minimum to get there. Shoot out a raven
3) Yes, i think this is the correct answer for all of the points listed, maybe makes for good tv but hurts the quality of the story.
Its the conjunction of the coming raid and likely outcome as well as all his prior questionable decisions that has me wondering why he is so dumb.

quote:I'm pretty sure he led the outnumbered Night's Watch to victory in the battle at Castle Black. Then he took it upon himself to end the war the only way he could with only 100+ men on his side vs 100,000 wildlings...by assassinating Mance on his own. It was his best and only choice.
Battle against the free folk - saved by stannis.
quote:He went to war with what he had because time was of the essence. He didn't have the support of the Vale because it wasn't the Vale's fight. His bitch of a sister had every opportunity to let him know she could get the support of the Vale though and she didn't.
Battle of the Bastards - saved by Knights of the Vale which he didn't even ask for their help.
quote:Maybe. But then he still has to take whatever troops he can north of the Wall anyway if they want to capture a wight to bring to Cersei. Once again, time is of the essence.

quote:The main character is a bastard who's been chosen to lead by two different groups of people already. He's constantly being thrown into situations where he faces overwhelming odds that would make most every man run or shite himself. I imagine Jon would gladly like to have the resources to steam roll over every opponent but that's not how this show works. Who would watch that show anyway?
The overall stupidity of the main character is starting to frustrate me.

This. We aren't talking just outnumbered. It was like 1,000 to 1.

Battle of the Bastards
The battle was brought to him. Ramsey was coming to get Sansa and he had no choice but to fight. His running into the thick of it was not a good decision, but ultimately the other plan would have failed as well if the Vale didn't show up. Sansa is completely to blame for this. She could have had LF and the Vale, without owing him anything, much earlier had she not been such a stupid shite in the show.
He conveniently left out Hardhome as well. He brought thousands of wildlings south of the wall preventing the Night King from building an even bigger army. That's what got him killed by a group of butthurt morons that couldn't see a simple truth. The current plan is desperation I agree, but it is necessary. They have to figure out a way to not be trapped between Cersei and a bunch of zombies.

His specialty is commanding females' hormones. His two major successes so far are Ygritte and Danny.

Actually, the answer is (should be) 100% no.
For all 3 eggs to petrify, they had to have been laid way before Balerion even hatched.
Eta: cheese monger probably telling the truth here.

I wish they could fit something like "LEAK SPOILERS" somewhere in the subject line of that thread. I've gone to click on it a couple of times before realizing what it was. Luckily I stopped in time.

And to the others, yes i forgot hardhomme, but that wasn't really a great "battle" where he was a commander. They were meeting people trying to rescue them, were attacked (many were slaughtered), he fought a whitewalker and then as many as could fled the place. That was certainly the correct decision and his best moment as a commander.
I'm not saying he is bad at fighting, but in terms of being a good leader / planner - he doesn't seem to do that well. Regarding the other two I know he was out-numbered and against the free folk he did well leading the defense of the wall, but he still had to be rescued by stannis to claim victory.
Battle of the Bastards was just bad, he knew they were marching into slaughter (Sansa should certainly have told him about potential Vale help) - and then any chance they had to actually win was destroyed by running forward like that - which was a horrible move in the moment.
