I'm reading the first book and I've read the Hodor safe wiki on the events that led up to Robert's Rebellion. That's how I've come to my theory on who is Jon Snow's mother.
I think the point they're making is that if you're someone who has watched the show exclusively without any backstory/wikis/etc that it's a tough conclusion to come to if you're not just trying to throw shite to the wall to see if it sticks.

Even when a character in the Brotherhood without Banners tells Arya he was Jon Snow's milk brother and knows Jon mom's name was cut from the show. Thought that was odd.
I don't remember this, who said they were milk brothers?

Edric Dayne, not positive but I think he might have been the one teaching Ayra how to shoot the bow faster on the show.

Edric Dayne
quote:
Lord Edric continues to squire for the revived Lord Beric, who establishes the Brotherhood Without Banners. They move throughout the Riverlands, fighting to protect the smallfolk from the War of the Five Kings. In their time in the Brotherhood Edric befriends Arya Stark, to whom he reveals that he and Jon Snow are milk brothers; that is, they were both nursed by the same woman, Wylla, who had been in service to the Daynes for some years.

I think Tyrion is referring to Lancel

I agree with this, but I'm in the same boat as Jim, having read the safe wiki and history of the families.

these do a great job filling in the gaps and go over certain events from the POV of different houses. like Roberts Rebellion from the POV of the Lannisters, Targs, Starks, etc

Throwback question to season 1/2.
Why was Jaime allowed to go fight in the war against Robb Stark? He's in the Kingsguard and from what I've gathered, their vows are pretty similar to the Knight's Watch. So why was he allowed to go on vacation from the Kingsguard and fight in a war just because his dad was leading it?

Quoting passages directly from the books now

Robb Stark was rebelling against the King.
The Kingsguard have always fought in wars. ex. Selmy was wounded at the Trident, and was a hero in the War of the Ninepenny Kings

Any reason why Robert Baratheon was backed as king, rather than Jon Arryn, Ned Stark, Tywin Lannister, etc...? Did he just have the largest army or what?
Posted on 6/16/14 at 2:50 pm to Epic Cajun
House Baratheon does have little dragon blood in their line.
Really Jon Arryn was too old, Ned Stark deferred to Robert. Plus Robert started the War and he just took it.

He had the best claim to the throne outside of Aerys himself. From the Wiki on Robert's Rebellion:
quote:
After all the rebels were united, it was decided they would stand behind Robert, whose grandmother had been the daughter of King Aegon V Targaryen, giving him the best claim to the throne outside of Aerys, his children and grandchildren.
They really couldn't afford to go with someone who didn't have some kind of blood claim to the throne because despite his batshit craziness there were still a lot of people in the realm that were loyal to Aerys Targaryen.

Thanks, I had read before that the Baratheons had some Targaryen blood in them, but didn't realize that was the reason behind him becoming King.

I like kashonly's theory about Gendry:
It's possible, right?
quote:
quote: More like Gendry is Roberts and Cersei's child.....Cersei wanted to mimic the Targaryens in having pure blood heirs....when Gendry was born, she knew he was Robert's so she and Jamie faked his death(she loves her children too much to kill them)...that's why Robert never acknowledge him, and his "mother"(random tavern whore) died at birth...but someone(lannister) was paying for his upbringing and apprenticeship.
It's possible, right?
Posted on 6/16/14 at 3:21 pm to iluvdatiger
i mean, i guess its possible but i doubt it. the person paying for his well being i assumed was Jon Arryn. Gendry even mentions Arryn visiting him before.
eta: no one really brought up Cersei coming clean to her father. did this happen in the book?
