I agree. Everyone is dumb and weak. Everything happens by accident or happenstance. Even a ruthless idiot like Ramsey Bolton would have been nice.

In GOT everyone was alive during Robert's rebellion and grew up in a landscape where you had to be cunning and ruthless to climb the social ladder. In HOTD, things have been stagnant for a VERY long time.
early on in season one of GOT, I remember mentions of the young knights/nobles never being in battle. and in the north you had talk of the long summer and "sweet summer child". I know this is a no book thread but I assume this is probably touched on more in the books but don't know because I haven't read them.
add in this being Targaryen dragon riders and an even longer period of peace compared to the beginning of GOT and Robert's rebellion, I think it's purposeful.

Not all nobles fought, but many did. It's how their houses got shaken up over time.

Never thought I'd agree with this statement.
Even more infuriating is if you get around to reading the book, the characters are much better written.

Unpopular opinion maybe but this season has been excellent. Outside of Paddy Considine carrying S1 I’d argue it’s the best yet.

Season is def legit, but damn Rahenera is such an awful ruler lol. It’s so frustrating it’s almost laughable.

I agree and I am enjoying the show
BUT
Its still several notches below seasons 1-6 of GOT. The issue is competency. People like to watch shows and movies about people who are good at what they do. No one is good at what they do in this show.

I never read the books but almost maybe seems intentional. It seems that Ormund is exposing her weaknesses and it certainly doesn't help that high small council has been pretty lackluster

She chose a horrible high council aside from Corlys who is rightfully bailing on her.
Have yall forgotten how terrible of a ruler her father was? How would she have learned any differently?
I keep trying to tell people this story is just a cautionary tale of what happens when incompetent people have control of the most destructive weapons in the world. Yes, everyone is terrible at their jobs. But if they werent then all of Westeros wouldnt be getting destroyed by dragons and there wouldnt be a story. It's the same thing IRL...if the world has semi competent leadership then wars should never go nuclear but if all governments become hyper dysfunctional then watch out.

I disagree that them being terrible at their jobs is the catalyst. If both sides were comeptent, you get the same war but fought with purpose. Tywin Lannister in GOT wasn't some great guy but he was politically saavy and he could wage an effective war. If he were in charge of one side I don't think he'd care about the smallfolk getting harmed but he'd wage an effective war.
The issue with this show is that the dialogue isn't smart and interesting the way it was in GOT and decision making lacks any sense.
With that said, I am enjoying the show. Its just not GOT level good.

Viserys created this mess with trying to make his daughter his heir over his male son despite never putting anything in place to help her take power at the time of his death which directly led to civil war. He just wanted to avoid any confrontation and leave his decendants to deal with it.
Rhaenyra trying to pass a bunch of bastards off as her heirs added more legitimacy to Aegon despite Aegon being someone no one actually liked or wanted to support.
But then we've seen several opportunities that both Alicent and Rhaenyra (and even Rhaenys) had to end the whole war before it started but they were unwilling to do what needed to be done.
All of this indecisiveness and incompetence led to multiple factions gaining enough strength to wage one of the most destructive wars you'll ever see. There were several chances to end it before it started, hence the whole show being based on "accidents."

He was a good man but a weak man, like Nicholas II and Louis XVI

I'd argue that competency on both sides would mean that both sides were never left so vulnerable to have the war ended in a moment. Or even if there was indecisiveness in the beginning, they are clearly in a full blown war at this point so there isn't a reason for it anymore.

The one nice thing about Alicent being captured is we no longer have these Girl talks where they try to figure out how to end the war.
Wish this was like GOT and they didn't hesitate to kill off main characters.

In fact everyone of consequence that might be dead seems to actually be alive. Aegon, his dragon, that Lannister dude, Laenor

Are we sure she's captured or is the White Worm helping her escape?

I'd be shocked if she was helping Alicent escape. Her head is up Rhaenyras arse. What would the motivation be?

Not only that, the only characters that showed any political savvy were Otto and clubfoot. Otto is dead and club foot isn't nearly as competent ad he was in S1.
Like I have said, this show is fine and I am enjoying it well enough but it lacks everything that made GOT great.

Sympathy? Another card in her playbook if the Hightowers win the war? Maybe Ormund has paid her or someone else to help her escape.
