It also has to do with the fact that there is definitely an effort to highlight 'female perspectives' which is why we get useless shite like Alicent and Rhaenyra's endless boring personality conflicts, way too much Lady Arryn and Alicent being sent to Harrenhall.

So do we think that Allicent snuck some moon tea into that soup she fed Heleana?

The handmaid that was talking in that scene is the same one that knew Mysaria knew about the potion Alicent ordered from the grand maester.

Then Mysaria lied to Rhanerya when she directly asked her if she had suspicions if Helenea was pregnant. Mysaria covering her tracks with Rhanerya.

At least this is what I think is going on there. I may be off

Jesus what a boring episode.

The opening scene kind of summed up the entire series. A main character that no one cared about is killed by a group of people that no one cared about. A non book reader probably couldn't even tell you what house or who it was that killed Cole and his men. This show is just so bad at making interesting characters. It's baffling.

Cannot believe they are spending so much time at Harrenhall given how awful all the scenes were there last season. it's like groundhogs day.

100%

Woman is a domestic terrorist to her kids at this point.

Helaena has never drank moon tea, so it's possible. You'd think she'd have remarked about the soup tasting funny, though.

I don't think Rhaenyra will be in KL long enough for Helaena to have the baby, however, so maybe a trick abortion is what motivates her to kill herself.

She’s been rolling with the Starks’ crew and Rivermen for a few episodes now, honestly that’s all that’s needed at this point (if people pay attention, I’m tired of seeing shite dumbed down). The characters that shoot him with arrows in the book aren’t in the show. The larger point is he didn’t get the hero’s death he wanted (even though I agree with blueboy that they fumbled not having the song line).

She plays a bigger role later on.

Side note, I’m still annoyed at Hugh’s wife. Girl, he went and claimed a dragon to give you a better life. Stop complaining.

I'm not saying dumb the show down I'm saying they have done nothing to make you care about the characters or even the conflict. Roddy the Ruin and Oscar Tully are legit nobody's to the audience and here they are taking out Cole (with the archer obviously). Half the people watching were probably thinking "Who are these people?" The show is supposed to fill in the gaps of the history book that is Fire and Blood and instead the battle played out on screen like a history book. Minus the best line of the entire battle. I'd argue that is dumbing the show down.

Sure.

It's just mediocre writing that's only saving grace is it's a very interesting world and source. Like I said before, this show is good for 2-3 really good episodes a season and the rest just a bit of a snooze fest. Two guys in my office that don't know the source and love all the GoT stuff, even season 8 of GoT, talked today about how bad this has been.

I'm not trying to pile on the show and I like it and will keep watching, but these past three episodes have been fairly bad. The ratings show it too. They would all three be the lowest rated episodes in season one and they will probably continue to drop as more come in.

Just frustrated because of the potential that is there.

You only have so much time to introduce characters, flesh them out, and still maintain your main core of characters. GoT suffered from similar at times when some characters took bigger roles in the books (the characters from Dorne for example).

IMO that’s a medium issue. Especially when it’s just 8 episodes every two years.

Just have to agree to disagree on that one. I think this season has been better than last. But we also know there were behind the scenes stuff that influenced the pacing last season.

I also think there’s a fair amount of people who are on their phones for half of the episode and have the attention span of a goldfish.

yes! Easily the most interesting and entertaining part. I’m so disinterested in everything else I’m kinda zoning out while watching. This is pretty clearly the least entertaining of the three shows

Sure but this season being better than the last is like being the tallest midget in the room. Being better than last season doesn't make it good writing. There is no way you can watch any season of HOTD and think its nearly as captivating from a pure conversational POV as GOT S1-S6. The dialogue and the decision making is on par with S7 and S8.

This show is lucky that its set in a world that holds interest on its own and that it has a built in fan base because on its own, its not very good.

Are there any characters on this show that you think are comparable to the best characters in GoT.? Even if you just went off the first three seasons of GoT. i don't think I like or think any character is as well written as Jamie, Tyrion, Jon, Ned, Catelyn, the Hound, Arya, Robb, Dany, Cersei, Jorah, Sam, Varys, Littlefinger, Bronn, or a host of others honestly. They all, and i mean all of them, just seem like cheap knock offs.

The source isn't as good so maybe i shouldn't expect them to be as good but I just think the writers have failed with character building. Quite literally any character on this show could die in the next episode and I wouldn't care.

I feel like not having any characters you care about after 2.5 seasons of a show is a little more than a medium issue.

I agree this season is better than last overall so far. I personally am not on my phone while watching so I don't know I'm sure a lot are. It's not a comprehension issue for me.

probably. Alicent was pretty insistent on giving her that one spoonful of soup

I like the haelena character I wish there was more for her to do. She could be so much more of a tragic figure

We also had them fleshed out over 8 seasons. At 10 episodes a season. With a story that was written with full POV chapters instead of the framework of a historical retelling with multiple conflicting narrators determining the machinations of the characters. And also didn’t have to deal with their network working against time behind the scenes. I don’t know that it’s a fair comparison.

I’d argue Matt Smith’s Daemon is a pretty iconic character at this point. Coryls is strong as well. King Viserys was great in the first season. Olivia Cooke has done a good job of making me absolutely loathe Alicent. I like what they’re doing with Gwayne Hightower at this point.

I think Larys is more cunning than Littlefinger at this point.

The writing could be better but I don’t think it’s nearly as awful as being portrayed.

And comparing it to GoT at its best, well, there’s not many shows that will match that. In this universe or not.

me either. We only really watch TV for a couple specific shows and that’s it. If I’m watching I’m trying to pay attention. The show is losing my attention and it’s not my fault.

The actors are also not as good.

Sure, but if they're going to have Aly kill Cole, the least they could have done is give her some lines in the previous episode or two to introduce her and familiarize the audience with her. Cole has been a major character since the first episode of the first season, and he was killed basically by a nobody, as far as non-readers are concerned.

Yeah but it was also a MUCH larger story with SOOO many more characters involved and they fleshed that out pretty well. I can guarantee no one watching GOT for the first time was sitting there 6 episodes into S3 with zero connection or care for any characters. Or consistently wondering to themselves how everyone is so dumb. Matter of fact the red wedding was in S3 of GOT and it was crazy because we cared about Rob and his mom and had strong opinions on the Freys. The butchers ball should have felt like a similar blow (albeit to the "enemy") but it felt flat because we didn't give af about Cole or the people killing him. It was also ruined by them unnecessarily sacrificing a bunch of soldiers with the fake dead thing when they already had them surrounded. Its dumb stuff like that that makes this show feel empty. Its like sending the Dothraki into the dark to attack the white walkers. It looked cool I guess but it was dumb and unnecessary.

I hated catelyn stark from the beginning and she is the reason for the ruin of their family.

Just sayin.

Yes, you had strong feelings about the character. Meaning you cared. No one in HOTD carries the same weight.
