Yeah but following SOS kings landing is the least interesting place to be. Tempered with dany, Jon and Tyron the storylines wouldn't be as boring. Granted by the end cersei's story is very interesting. The Jaime chapters are terrible

PPS: This is becoming a "book reader thread"

The OP asked for non-spoilers. Anyone that posted anything even spoiler related should edit.

Oh...and Feast isn't bad. It went like every other one of the books (except Storm). Its a little slow at first, then everything picks up a little past half way. Once you hit that point, they are hard to put down.

I agree. It took me a while to get into it but AFFC wasn't half as bad as people make it out to be. I think people were just really pissed about the book having mostly new POV characters. It did however bring the whole ice and fire world up to date for me at least by giving all this info on other world happenings.

What the frick?

How can you spoil something that's already happened? I spoiled nothing. It's one inconsistency between show and book. I named no names.

All these other posts about Reeds and you jump my arse?

You must needs suck me.

I thought they were some of the best in the book.

Or I just think it's ignorant to skip books in a series where the little things are important in plot progression and you miss those not reading all of them?

Or you're being judgemental and need to get off your high horse. I thought we covered this already.

I never even considered putting book 1 on hold until I saw this thread. After the multiple responses agreeing that putting it off wouldn't hurt your enjoyment of the series, I decided that I would take the advice.

Not everyone leads the same life, so no one person should ever make blanket judgements like you are doing.

So again. Back off Belle.

If time is a constraint, then definitely won't hurt to hold off on the first until after. But reading the first WILL enhance the enjoyment of the rest of the series (both books and HBO IMO) through the details and storylines that are only scratched by the HBO series

I agree with Belle. By skipping AGoT, you will miss some backstory and nuisances that the TV show just can't recreate. Many of the theories and conjectures that are talked about have some basis in AGoT.

Just my two cents. It's a great series.

Thanks for the advice. I do appreciate it. Belle's opinion on the importance of book 1 isn't my problem. It's her being an a-hole about it.

Get some balls. I read SoS (1128 pages) in 4 days. FFC isn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Cersei and Jamie's storylines are amazing, and I love Sansa's as well. The only shitty chapters are Brienne and the Ironborn shite I am about to be at the Kingsmoot so hopefully they pick up

Dude, I'm not gonna say you are full of it but for sure you are one hell of a fast reader. Can you remember anything of what you read? Surely you just skimmed it in 4 days.

I say the above because the audio book is 47.5 hrs long over 39 CDs. It took me about a week to listen to it and I'm retired, needing only to bathe, eat, and pizz every 2 hours. That's an average of about 7 hours per day.

you da man, for reading, that is.

Everyone do yourselves a favor and read the first fricking book.

It just doesn't make any sense not to.

And as far as it taking too much time, that isn't a good excuse. I have two children under five, work 50+ hours a week and have read the entire series twice since October, while reading other book series, LOTR including the Hobbit and The Silmarillion and the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series.

Not trying to brag just pointing out that it doesn't take that long to read these books.

I am glad this thread got back to a nonspoiler topic.

I am reading the first book, as I said in the first post, but I really don't find that it adds anything to the television show (as of yet). Again, I don't know if that changes.

The only real differences I have noticed (and these aren't spoilers just differences because of TV reality vs. book reality:

1) Age of children. TV had to go older since the seasons are in consecutive years and it is hard to make a actor age quick enough on TV to move the story along.

2. Physical characteristics of the Imp.

3. How cold Winterfell is.

I read each book in less than a week with the exception of AFFC. So somewhere between 4-6 days to read one. It's really not that difficult when you want to read them.

Read somewhere that Martin said if he could go back, he would make them the age they are in the TV show.

That's really not the differences people are trying to explain. There was an entire thread on here earlier where the premise was the nickname people used in the show to identify people since they didn't know their names. If you read the books, you not only know who they are, but you understand their motivations due to history, relationships, etc. Yes, there isn't much of a difference in the first season and first book as far as the story goes. There is, however, a shite load more to it that you would never know if you only watched the show.

Damn i don't know how you people read that fast. I averaged about two months per book for the first 4 and have taken 6 months so far in ADWD and am only in the 600's although i only read about two or three chapters a week off and on. I enjoy reading at a leisurely pace.

I read pretty fast, but I also have an eight week old child, a 50-60 hour week job, and a wife who likes me to pay attention to her. It slows the reading process down. I can’t just devour a 1000 page novel in a weekend anymore.

I have finally started to read GoT and I’m making good progress, and I plan on waiting to watching the TV series until I finish. I do think Martin telegraphed a few things. I was having a conversation with a fan of the books in my office, and I guessed a lot of the future events, though my timeline was all off. I do like the breaks during the day because I have time to think on what happened. I’m at a point where I’m just irritated by current events because I think everyone’s position is untenable. I want to read about a billion pages.
