GOT Book vs. television series question: Non spoilers (hopefully)

A few weeks ago a few posters said that you should definately read the first book and not skip ahead to the third book. However, I have read half of the first book (and rewatched the first season concurrently), and other than a few scenes here and there, the television series has been very faithful to the book. Is this going to change? I don't mind reading the books, but if I can cut out 2,000 pages by not reading the first two books, I can get on to reading the other books I have stacked up.

I started at the second and didn't miss a beat and was still able to come to the same conclusion about Jon as other readers. The second book and season are very different though

I would recommend reading the first one solely for prophecies and history that the first season doesn't cover. This however could be done after reading 2-5. The second book is a must read. They deviated a shite ton in the second season.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through listening to the 1st book and really haven't picked up on any differences so far. Wish I would've started with book 2 instead. I've heard that Dany's story is a bit different in book 2 vs. the show.

this works for the first book minus a pretty important scene with ned but the second book is pretty different and you would be lost if you jumped into the 3rd

You can not read the first one and not miss anything important at all. You do need to read the second book because things are different

Book 2 is different with a few story lines and gives more details. Example- arya is 100x more badass in the book

Yeah, realistically you could just read the last 200 pages of the first book and get the flashbacks the series left out of the first book. But yeah, the second tv season left out and deviated a fair bit from the book, so you'd definitely want to read it.

Just read them in sequence for fricks sake

frick that the last 3 are 1000 pages each and FFC is painful to read

This thread has popped up so often that I am starting to feel bad for the people that skip AGOT. It's arguably the second best book in the series and you are missing out on a great literary work. If you are going to spend so much time reading a series, why short change it. Also, what makes the books so great is the world GRRM creates. The show simply cant replicate that. Lastly, you realize how much the books refer to each other the more you read.

GOT is my 2nd favorite for sure.

This.
Just quit being lazy and read them if you want. I've reread GOT at least twice. Its an amazing book.
Do you absolutely have to to understand book 2? No, but why wouldn't you want to?

Damn dude, I owe you one. I was about to start book 1 and you just saved me a lot of time with this thread. On to book 2 I go

It really amazes me that people are lazy about reading. It is taking laziness to another level when you don't feel like reading a book to skip to the 2nd one in a series.

you don't want to skip it bro

Get some balls. I read SoS (1128 pages) in 4 days. FFC isn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Cersei and Jamie's storylines are amazing, and I love Sansa's as well. The only shitty chapters are Brienne and the Ironborn shite I am about to be at the Kingsmoot so hopefully they pick up

the kingsmoot is amazing. one of the best chapters in the series, IMO.
