I'll come back to it for sure but with a 5 and 2yr old, school and work, I don't have a ton of time to read. I'm trying to catch up as fast as I can before next season.

Understandable. You MUST read book 3 (Storm of Swords) before the next season.

Absolutely. I'm going to shoot for book 4 as well so I can hang in the bookreader threads.

Damn dude, I owe you one. I was about to start book 1 and you just saved me a lot of time with this thread. On to book 2 I go

Why would you do this? Clearly you're reading the books for enjoyment or you wouldn't be reading them at all.. yet you all complain about "having" to read the first book? nonsensical at best.

You don't want to do that until after you've finished book 5

the kingsmoot is amazing. one of the best chapters in the series, IMO.

Great. I was thinking they were pulling a Breaking Bad and building up slowly to an awesome climax.

If you're going to skip books in the series then don't bother reading at all. The whole purpose of reading the books if you're watching the show is to get the little details/stories you won't in the show. That even occurs in the first book. Plus they're all great books in the bigger scheme of things.

I'll never get why people want to skip books on series. Just defeats the purpose.

Can I ask about Arya in the book vs. the show?

(Possible minor spoilers I guess)

Any reason the show has her working directly with Tywin in Harrenhall, but the book doesn't (At least not at the point I am at in book 2)?

Also, why does the show not even mention the Reed kids or the "green dreams?

because the directors are fricking genius and could foresee those 2 actors having some of the best scenes of the season

I definitely enjoyed their scenes very much. Not mad about it, just wondering. Any thoughts on why the Reeds weren't included in the show? They play a fairly prominent role in Book 2 (as does Bran it seems). I feel like Season 2 of the show didn't give Bran enough of a story.

The reeds are being cast for next season. Theyre just pushing that storyline back some

Cool. I am about 50% through the second book, and they seem like interesting characters. I just get the feeling they will play a part in whatever happens.

What's this about AGoT being second favorite in series? As far as plot progression, maybe slow compared to ACoK and'Swords, but as far as the poetry of the language and literary value, AGoT is way ahead of any other book in the series.

Anyone who skips ahead to "hang with the book readers" beware: The series puts one character's words in other character's mouths, and deeds done by one in the book are done by another/many others in the series. The reader crew is a serious bunch. Try to bluff them and ye will be embarrassed.

Anyone who skips ahead just for plot progression, you are missing the whole point of reading. The hidden meanings and foreshadowing of events are the meat and potatoes of ASoIaF. If I were you, just play on the OT till S3.

and last...If you don't have time to read for pleasure, then don't. Martin is long winded and will frustrate you with his seeming much ado about nothing. I'm on my first re-read, and already had more than a few "a-ha" momments...in AGoT alone.

80% into A Dance with Dragons and I would hate to have skipped GoT. Not only does it have the meat of the series, it gets you used to Martin's writing style before he goes ape shite and rolls out all these characters.

Its my opinion that the first book should be read.

Oh...and Feast isn't bad. It went like every other one of the books (except Storm). Its a little slow at first, then everything picks up a little past half way. Once you hit that point, they are hard to put down.

Feast doesn't get enough credit. People forget that it and Dance are all one huge book...should be read in sequence as given on Tower of the Hand. Feast and Dance are two halves of what Martin called "King Kong" while writing Dance.

PS TWoW he is calling "Son of Kong"

PPS: This is becoming a "book reader thread"
