think one thing that hurts casino for some people is that some of the main characters become very unlikable during the movie.

My mother worked by at the Stardust at the time. Said they took a bunch of liberties in the movie but they did a good job on the personalities from what she could remember.

The list is shite. I love Goodfellas, but it's not like it invented any of the styles that the article is claiming others ripped off.

It's like saying Captain Phillips ripped off Goodfellas bc they put credits at the end of the movie...just like Goodfellas

I just don't get the love for Goodfellas. I thought it was good but I just don't think of it as one of the greatest movies of all time like some do.

Same here

I know the stories very well. Still doesn't take away the idea of why someone might not like casino as much

Swingers self-referentially took from a few movies, not just Goodfellas. Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, Casino... and it was all done in an obvious manner of tribute.

Kind of funny that Don Rickles was on the Frank Rosenthal Show back in the day and then ended up in Casino as Ace's right hand man.

Look, "Goodfellas" is a top 3 movie of all time for me.
"Casino" is probably a top 10-top 15 movie for me. Shoot, I've probably seen it more times than "Goodfellas" -- it's always on HBO OnDemand.
But the movies are extremely similar -- a couple of the same actors, Joe Pesci basically plays the same character is both movies, there's narration in both movies, I wouldn't be shocked if the same songs are used in both movies, the movies are structured the same. Granted, a lot of these things are Scorsese hallmarks -- he's probably used every Rolling Stones song written from 1968 to 1972 TWICE in his movies.

They missed "Swingers".

Swingers wasn't ripping off Goodfellas. It was parodying Scorsese's style. That's not exactly the same thing.

This, it was paying homage to a particular shot.

I can't help but wonder if the people saying Casino is better are just trying to be contrarians or just have poor taste

Anyway, forget the plot or the story or whatever mught make someone think Casino is better, from a film making standpoint, Goodfellas is the superior film by a wide margin.

The tracking shot (aka long take) with Henry and Karen going into the Copa is legendary, one of the best in film history.

LINK

The cinematography and use of music perfectly set the tone of the film and really fit the time frame and mood from the early 60's kind of happy go lucky beginings to the frantic, coke fueled paranoid end. The climax when Henry is running around and cooking dinner, not sure if he's being followed by helicopters or just paranoid from too much coke make the audience feel the same way almost, the music is especially great in that sceene.

Overall it is just a much better movie. A master film maker at his best.

Try listening to this 3 hour 15 minute discussion of Goodfellas (longer than the actual movie) and tell me it's not one of the greatest movies of all time.

Goodfellas is one of those movies that I can admit is a very well-done movie I just don't find it to be a good or enjoyable movie. I think it's maybe the pacing but could be other things. It's akin to Platoon for me.

Gimme Casino anyday over it.

“Goodfellas” also pioneered the now-popular tactic of starting a movie in the middle before zipping back in time to give us the back story — in everything from “John Wick” to Nicholas Sparks adaptations to “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
guardians of the galaxy started with starlord getting abducted when he was a kid.....

I thought it started with him dancing through the alien ruins getting whatever artifact, then it went back to him being abducted.
