I first saw DBZ when I was 20 and I instantly loved it. I did see a few episodes of the original Dragon Ball when I was 18 though. I think most anime is considered to be for kids in Japan despite having a slightly older audience in America. I don't think its any more of a kids' show than any of the Marvel movies today.

Levi is currently my favorite Anime character of all time

My daughter loves my joke, "Levi-type beats Beast-type"

That's awesome!!

Levi is a total badass. If he had first shown up in a fantasy novel instead of an anime, he would be more appreciated.

Hot take: Dragon Ball is actually a better anime than Dragon Ball Z. DBZ has some pretty massive peaks and valleys where there’s nothing fricking happening at all and then A LOT happening.

There are much better animes

Dragon ball probably has the widest appeal. DBZ appeals to exactly who it's supposed to, the shounen age demo (preteen to young men ).

There are some decent recommendations for starter anime in here. Truly depends on what you like though. There are numerous genres and sub genres of anime. As has been pointed out, it's not easy to recommend something totally blind.

Cowboy Bebop is very accessible to western audience. It's relatively short, fast paced, minimally "weird," well animated, awesome characters, Faye Valentine, and good music. It's similar to Firefly in that it's a western set in space.

For sure it's on Hulu and Crunchyroll right now. It may be streaming other places too.

If you're into scifi, consider watching Ghost in the Shell movie. It has more weird in it, but adds to the mystique.

Squidbillies on Max (13 seasons)

If you don't like it, you'll know early on.

There's a reason Cartoon Network used Dragon Ball Z as its flagship Anime for the after school timeslot in the 90s.

It eased in American audiences to the genre because it so closely fits with more western action and comic book properties of the time.

Ease in with DBZ, then go to something like Gundam Wing, which is basically an international, Intergalactic Shakepearean power struggle, political intrigue thriller with 100ft tall robots that use frikin laser swords and batwing double-bladed axes in space...

Cowboy Bebop would also be something good to start. That and Akira, which is a film, but you still something you should watch.

Want a slice-of-life high school love triangle story? Check out Kimagure Orange Road (available for streaming on Pluto.tv right now).

The biggest "weirdness" is that the main character and his siblings have ESP, but that's mostly just used as a plot device every now and then.

Do you like baseball? How about a slice-of-life high school baseball story in Touch? (Even older show with an older animation style, and you may have to go find it online somewhere.)

No weirdness in that one, really. Just don't read about it before watching or you'll spoil it for yourself.

Your Name. Never saw any anime before watching this. It’s one of my favorite movies. Be sure to watch it with subs.

not too fricking weird

This is highly dependent on your idea of "weird", but:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Cyberpunk and action)

One Punch Man (Superhero action)

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (Comedy)

The Way Of The Househusband (Comedy - ultra short episodes)

For movies:
Ghost in the Shell
Redline
Akira

The goat is Avatar the Last Airbender. It is so good that it set records on Netflix.

I have seen most of the shows listed here, but not all. These are all good shows, but may not be for someone who is new to anime.

Check out the IMDB top series of all time and view which animes make the list.

Was coming to say Vinland Saga. Good anime on Vikings, 2 seasons on Netflix.

Death Note ( do not watch the movie before it's not even close to being as good and will just spoil it)
Cowboy Bebop -- both not very long series.

Lots that others have said but the longer series have alot of filler episodes that you can skip over.

What else would be like Last Airbender? That was an awesome miniseries… so anything like that level of “weirdness” in that it wasn’t all tentacles and gross slimy stuff. Haha

It also kind of depends on his taste. DBZ and Cowboy Bebop are intended for two very different audiences. Bebop is more mature. DBZ is still very much intended for kids at times and can have some very anime weird moments. We were kids and never noticed it as much

Gundam Wing is actually a decent rec. it’s anime but it’s kind of a mix between how serious and mature Cowboy Bebop is with its themes and still having cool action like DBZ

Outlaw Star is another one in that vein of scify action without too much weirdness.
