Okay man.

I'll clarify. It's not anywhere near the try hard type of comedy as the all female one. It used dry humor and jokes that intentionally went over some people's heads. I'm not criticizing that, I love it for that reason. The OG Ghostbusters is a GOAT movie. If this new one uses that same humor, I'm optimistic about seeing it.

If the new one used the same humor, I think the Millennials and younger wouldn't like it. Reitman Jr. was correct in toning down the humor to sync with your young memories of the original.

if that was the case, then it would've been very 3 Stooges like. it's more serious than it is a comedy even now that i'm older and understand most of the jokes.

this conversation is going to turn into the Die Hard/Christmas movie debate.

but, i don't think the comedy is what made the movie what it is. its the mystic/fantasy of catching/busting ghosts utilizing science.

the same can be said for Back to the Future. just swap out ghostbusting for time travel.

It is the case. He and the other actors have said it over and over again through the years. The very name of the movie is a reference to that.

Because you say so? Because that fits your expectations the best?

That saddens me.

No it isn't.

Doesn’t even matter. This movie is going to break some records this weekend and everyone is going to want a little stay puffed marshmallow kid.

the '80s comedies i listed earlier, Stripes, Caddyshack, NL Vacation, Beverly Hills Cop, etc., are much more better comedies than Ghostbusters. and that's because Ghostbusters is a Sci-Fi Action movie with comedic relief. what they wanted the movie to be and what we got are two different things.

i was probably "introduced" to that list of comedies well after i grew up watching ghostbusters. if i were to watch any of them in one sitting, including Ghostbusters '84, i'd laugh more at the others than i would GBs. and that's not a knock on GBs. i enjoy it for different reasons.

if we were to compromise, i'd call it an "action-comedy". action comes first because that's what it is with some comedy sprinkled in.

"Its not as funny as the originals..."
No shite.

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis... That trio will never be matched.

Great. You have an opinion.

Nah. They're the same thing. Your personal interpretation is definitely the minority.

Literally every scene in the movie.

The original Ghostbusters wasn't some laugh a minute gag filled pure comedy either so...

It wasn't and that was the beauty of the movie. Sometimes the humor was extremely subtle.

I never knew the “barbecue dog hair” line was supposed to be funny. I can’t imagine someone busting a gut over that.

Ghostbusters is as much a comedy as anything else. And that's the reason I always come back to it.

It's like saying Dumb and Dumber is a road trip movie with some comedic relief.

Wow

I never even considered that someone would call Ghostbusters "not a comedy". It's a hilarious movie.

I guess a good analogy to it's humor is the early Pink Panther movies. Tons of subtlety done with a deadpan delivery, with occasional forays into more overt silliness, and also into some serious (or at least dramatic) pieces. It's written to be appreciated by adults; not all comedies are intended for pre-adolescents.

The might be want he envisioned but i believe the audience totally bought in that 1st “Ghostbusters” would actually look exactly like they ended up looking in the movie. A bunch of Scientists trying to apply their theoretical knowledge to actual applications that had NEVER been done before.

Theoretically they THOUGHT their inventions would work to catch ghosts but they had no idea bc they never actually did it. The scene in the original when they catch Slimer in the hotel was pure genius and just how I would’ve thought the 1st ever ghost bust would’ve gone done. A whole bunch of destruction bc nobody actually knew what to do but in the end their stuff worked and they caught the ghost.

It was relate-able bc you really believe Ramis was an egghead scientist. Akroyd was kind of the weird socially awkward engineer and Murray was the “To Cool for School” type guy. Throwing the “working man” in with Hudson really just completed the squad perfectly.

I wish someone would compare the reviews (by each reviewer) of this one to the remake a few years ago. I have a stinking feeling it will be eye-opening.

Btw, have already seen headlines stating how the remake will outperform this one. The narrative is already out there - amazing that super-genius marketing people control everything these days.

How old were you when you first saw it??

This seems like you saw it really young and were scared because of the “ghosts” aspect and that feeling has just stuck with you.

It is 100% a comedy, one of the best.
