What he is butthurt about is the huge backlash he got over the first 3. He incorrectly thought the spectacle of CGI was the reason people loved the original trilogy. It was characters and story development.
You can read stuff dating back to the 70's and 80's that shows he didn't get Star Wars, as far as what it was and what it meant to people, right after the first film came out. If he had been in complete control of the final two movies like he was the first I doubt it would have become the beloved trilogy it is today.

There was no CGI in the original trilogy.

If you don't get applause from the audience, you don't make money, and Star Wars ceases to exist.

Agreed.
George Lucas created star wars. But Lawrence Kasdan perfected it. Without Kasdan there is no Empire. Or Raiders. Or TFA.

Lucas might have given birth to Star Wars, but it outgrew him. The original explanations he gave in interviews and documentaries in the 80's were much closer to the way I saw it than anything he's said in recent years.

American Graffiti is a great film and there's no CGI.
THX was a pretty good student film.
But that was early 1970's and then he did Star Wars Episode IV and no directing until the prequels.
For 30 years he was a just a businessman.
He's directed 3 real films in his life Graffiti, THX and the first Star Wars. He's an old man, who writes terrible dialogue and can't be trusted behind the camera because he wasn't that good to begin with.
He had a great idea...and made billions on toys and royalties. Even he admitted if he had the CGI tech back in 1977 A New Hope would have been very different...= prequel crap.
In some way, technology and lack thereof saved him back in the day.
He should have no input, he made it a business and sold it and there are far better writers and directors to move the story forward.

Episode 8 could consist of Rey and Finn farting for three hours and it would make a billion in two weeks. You can make fans happy without spoon feeding them nostalgia.

So you're suggesting that watching farts for three hours would make the fans happy?
I haven't seen it yet but I already know that the absence of George Lucas is the best thing that ever happened to Star Wars.

too much cgi, and had idiot characters like jar jar.
I'm convinced GL chickened out on the Jar Jar Sith plot, and rightfully so only because EVERYTHING about the character was shite. He made him overly annoying, stupid looking, stupid sounding...if he had only LISTENED to someone, anyone who said (and I know there HAD to be a voice of reason in there) "George, there's no way in Hell you can turn this POS into an Uber Sith Lord...in looking at the concept art, I think if we went with a character more like..."
It sickens me to think what the prequels COULD have been.
I'm not saying this was their only deficiency, by any stretch, but...

You laugh about three hours of flatulence, but that's almost the style Lucas would've reached with these - silly characters with the two or three obligatory gross out moments.

Editing is what saved Star Wars. It is cringeworthy to realize just how close the original came to being horrible..only to be saved in the 11th hour with truly masterful editing.

I'd rather watch the award winning short film "The Web" than a farting documentary.

He's too old to pull it off. Abrams did a good to great job. He used CGI but did not overuse it. It is meant to accent the film and make the impossible possible. Like the Millenium Falcon clipping objects while flying. Not have entire screens filled with CGI like the underwater shuttle scene with Jar-Jar. That was absolutely ridiculous.
Lucas even made a comment about them not making enough new characters with TFA and new spacecraft. It didn't need new spacecraft. Just tweaks on what already existed. He has just been dead wrong with everything since 1983. He's mad. I wish I could have $4 Billion to be mad.
