I doubt we'll get it today. It would take some time to actually tell the story, and they're going to want to address everything that happened in last season's finale, first.

The smart play would be to finish both books and release them back to back within a year or two. He needs to get the books out while the show is still on, while interest is high.
It's wishful thinking but I bet it's what his publishers are pushing for.

Let's say he survives another 5 years to finish ADOS, I do agree that it will be a much quicker release than books 4-6. George just didn't have any idea how he would resolve this, since clearly some plots seemed to have been intended to take place over half a decade (Dany, Arya, and Sansa) while some clearly had to take off right after the events of the novel (Cersei, Tyrion, Jon, and Theon). He didn't know what he was doing, and then with WoW he's going to have to start killing off characters rapidly and get everyone back to Westeros. I think he'll be at that point at the end of WoW, and since all the pieces are set up he'll be able to write much more quickly.
But if WoW was ready, I think he would have released it before the show could ruin it.

Go out the same way as Lysa? No, LF deserves a much better death than that. Plus the Eyrie is closed for Winter.
And I definitely don't want him dead tonight. LF is down South while Sansa is in the North. Sansa needs to find out what horrible things he's actually done to her and her family before she offs him.

Yeah, I know the moon door thing isn't going to happen. Perhaps she stabs him in the back, even more poetic.
