I am thinking about starting reading from this point. Can't wait until next spring. Where are we in the books?

That would be a terrible decision.

They mostly finished book 3 and have dipped into Books 4 and 5.

Read them from the beginning or you will be pretty confused. There are lots of characters and events left out of the show.

I suggest a full reading. I was thinking about doing what you are doing after S1, but I went ahead and started with the first book. I was done in no time. Well before S2 started. Thinking about doing a re-read, but I don't have a ton of time right now.

You can't go wrong if you start with book 1.

If you start at 4, you will pick up on the earliest story lines.

Bad idea. You will be very confused. The show changed several details that really alter the arcs of several major characters. Also, the show has done some things from books 4 and 5 while not having done everything yet from book 3.

Tyrion: just ended with Book 3
Arya: just ended Book 3
Jaime: just ended Book 3
Cersei: just ended Book 3
Theon: Middle of Book 5
Brienne: Middle of Book 4
Jon: Not quite through Book 3
Bran: Middle of Book 5
Sansa: We're in spoiler territory with her for the most part
Asha/Yara: Beginning Book 4

I say start with book 4 and you will be alright. Snobby book people will tell you that you will be lost, but you will be fine.

I really don't think so. The show has deviated from the books. Just start from the beginning.

Impossible. Just start from the beginning, don't be a pussy. There is so much that is left out starting in book 1. It's an injustice to yourself to try to do it otherwise.

That's true, I may have been thinking book 3. It's been a while.

If you are going to do that read the last chapter(epilogue) of Storm of Swords first. That was left out of last night's show and is kind of important.
