Has there ever been better television than this?

I honestly can’t think of anything that can top it. It’s just perfect.

Undisputed GOAT. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to themselves.

As far as television goes... It's probably the greatest achievement in the medium's history.

I don't, though, think it's the greatest show ever...Why? Because it's not really a show. It's a one-off production that did not and does not follow the constraints put on most TV productions.

It's as if it's on a separate mountaintop than the likes of Sopranos, Seinfeld, MASH, etc... It's not the Himalayas and it's not the Andes... It's just its own, perfect concoction the likes of which --for many reaosns-- will probably never be duplicated.

The Pacific is awesome, but I did find that it benefited from multiple viewings. I enjoyed more the second & third times I went through it.

Update, and I’m sure you all know this by now, but still:

BLYTHE LIVED.

The show actually got it wrong; he recovered, and served until 1967 when he died on active duty in Germany.

Yea, it’s not really fair to compare a 1 and done show to normal tv shows that span 5, 10 or even more years

That doesn’t take away from its greatness though

It's the only series I have watched several times and could still watch again. I watched it the first time when you still had to actually go to the movie rental place and check the DVDs out. I ended up spending like 20 bucks one weekend because I was so addicted I binged it and kept having to go back to the store to rent 3 or 4 discs at a time.

I'm halfway through my first rewatch and I think the only thing that's close is True Detective S1

Agree with a lot of that perspective.

I rank it in the "miniseries" category. And for me, it's #2 all time. I have the original Planet Earth as my #1 miniseries of all time, but I loved it that much and thought it was not only great, but an excellent achievement in its own right. But I certainly wouldn't argue with people who put BoB as #1 in that category, because it is just THAT good. It's excellent television, and even very rewatchable.

Still need to give The Pacific another shot. Tried watching the first go round when it aired, and grew tired of it quickly. Even though I tried not comparing it to BoB, I did (unfairly to TP).

When I tell people they need to watch BoB, I tell them to watch the Pacific first. I thought it was really good once I figured out it was not BoB 2.

BoB to the Pacific is kind of like the Civil War compared to anything else Ken Burns has done. They are good but suffer by comparison.

If the hunting scene doesn't get you emotional, I don't know what would.

As much as I love the Lonesome Dove miniseries, I have to agree.

Part of its greatness was that it dealt with real people.
These guys were pulled out of the cities, the small towns and rural areas to be formed into an Army that would defeat one of the greatest military powers ever.

ETA Ken Burns' Civil War documentary was pretty good too.

Well I don’t know, Bc I’ve heard that Breaking Bad is the greatest artistic achievement in human history. Except for maybe the Wire. So I don’t know where that leaves BoB.
