Despite the overall sentiment about 3, it has some great scenes and is also pretty good for overall closure.

See it.

What do you have to do to be a buff?

So Biff wants to be a buff? Well, sleeping less than eighteen hours a day would be a start.

You can hate a genre and still respect greatness.

The Godfather is a damn near flawless movie. 2 is objectively better.

I think it should be required viewing for American high schools. It’s one of the few great stories where you views on the characters changes as you get older.

On the flip side, if you hate traditional mobster movies you need to watch A most violent year. Mainly for Oscar Isaac dropping a power house performance but it also bucks a lot trends.

I've always liked the third Godfather.

I mean, no one argues it's as good as the first two, but it's a good movie.

That's a bit elitist. The Godfather is not the end all, be all of films. No single film is required to have a broad knowledge of film, nor is The Godfather the most important film ever made.

Is this Dieter? I don't think I could imagine a more elitist comment. If anything, the OP is ageist. Even the 90s looks like ancient history to the young. What do you think the 70s look like?

It's called being a man. If you are an American and you were born into this world a male, you aren't officially a man until you have seen The Godfather.

I didn't say it was.

True enough, but if you claim to love the movies and have never seen The Godfather, then I'm afraid I can't take your opinion as seriously as someone who has seen The Godfather.

And that's not elitism talking. It's the truth.

Well, no. But if you're calling yourself a "movie buff" when you haven't seen multiple movies that are regularly ranked high in "all-time" lists, then it's fair to question some expertise there.

Ranked as best of all time and shown repeatedly on basic and higher tier cable.

It's not like not seeing The Seven Samurai. If you haven't seen The Godfather, you've actively avoided it.

Again, I don’t know what a movie buff is, sounds kind of gay, but The Godfather is absolutely one of the best movies ever made.

The opening with the wedding is just great cinema. I like the old dude singing. It just feels real.

The third one wasn’t very good. They should have edited them and made 1&2 into a trilogy.

But the implication is that someone is a "so called 'movie buff'" if they haven't seen the film, therefore, it's a film that determines some level of "knowledge."

You just said that you didn't say it was the end all, be all of films, but here we are.

Of course, but see above, if the person hasn't seen the Godfather, but apparently every other important film, the OP believes their opinion to be invalid.
