Almost famous and Spinal Tap are great, but I want to discuss real life.
Just finished watching Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. Pretty great documentary with all the band members participating and a solid analysis of their band and it's sound throughout the years. I really enjoyed it.
It might get loud is another good one.
Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is probably my favorite.

There was a good one I saw recently "The Other F Word". It was about musicians, mainly punks, who were dads. Some pretty good interviews. They followed the lead singer of Pennywise and it was kind of cool to see how a working musician juggled being a father.
"Some Kind of Monster" was great because you saw what awful little bitches Metallica are. There's a good one about Lemmy from Motorhead. They just follow him around his crowded arse apartment, to the neighborhood bar, talked about his issues with substances.
The guys who did the Rush documentary have one coming out about Alice Cooper. I'm looking forward to that one.

We Jam Econo is pretty personal for me. Ian MacKaye still has the Post-It note from getting the call about D Boon's death.
Filth and the Fury. I'm not the biggest Sex Pistols fan, but having John Lydon show actual human emotion regarding Sid was a surprisingly honest moment.
Anvil! OK, the band is horrible and completely tasetlessly offensive, but I still rooted for them and their fundamental Canadian decency. A great look at how hard the rock n roll dream dies.
Some Kind of Monster. I cannot believe Metallica allowed this to be released. They are the real life Spinal Tap, right down to Kirk Hammett unintentionally giving the the other guys are fire and ice, while I am tepid water speech.
The Decline of Western Civilization Parts 1 and 2. It really can't be described. Just find it and watch it.

I finished watching the Rush doc yesterday, great one.
Check out Beware of Mr. Baker - Amazing doc about Ginger Baker and what an arse he is...I love him
Ain't In it for my Health is a good one about Levon Helm.

The History of the Eagles. It's loooooooooooong but good.

Watching those three sit together & laugh is heartening. Most of these docs can't get the band members in the same time zone.
I'll second The Eagles, but put a few hours aside-and it's exhibit A of guys not wanting to be in the same room.
Runnin Down a Dream about Petty/Heartbreakers is great, and Everyone Stares is must see for any Police fan. Copeland super eighted their entire tour (and studio stuff) when they were first breaking.

Concert Movies or Documentaries?
If we're talking concert movies I'm a big fan of Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

Pearl Jam 20 and Foo Fighters Back and Forth were both good. PJ20 sort of serves as a brief history of grunge too. The guy who did the Rush documentary also did the Metal Evolution series and Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, plus Lemmy, Super Duper Alice Cooper, and Iron Maiden: Flight 666. His next project is supposed to be about Soundgarden.

I'm not a big fan of the genre these days. In my younger days I enjoyed Korn Live and a Slipknot live show DVD, I can't remember the name.

Running Down a Dream is the best one I've ever seen. If you haven't watched it, do yourself a favor. If you're not a Petty fan, you will be by the end.
Live at Pompeii was my favorite until I watched Petty's. History of the Eagles is a close 3rd for me.

I'd imagine people will enjoy music documentaries more if they're about a band or genre they like. I'm not a huge rap fan but I did enjoy the NWA documentary narrated by Chris Rock.

I've been wanting to watch PJ20. I have Touring Band 2000 and it's my favorite concert hands down.
Check out Blind Melon Live at the Metro. It was filmed about a month before Shannon died and features a lot of stuff from Soup.

Metal Evolution was good, really enjoyed Iron Maiden: The Early Years DVD as well. The Rush one was great as well. Brings some humanity to Neal Peart.

love almost famous but who doesn't.
"it might get loud" wasn't that great but it taught me how awesome jack white is, how lame the edge is, and how jimmy page isn't as cool as i wanted him to be.
